Along with the UK and Germany, Italy is one of the most attractive markets for battery storage in Europe. Like many other European countries, the Italian energy market is undergoing a fundamental change. Due to the significant development of new renewable energy sources, battery storage plays a pivotal role in ensuring grid stability and security of supply while reducing system costs. The Italian market is especially attractive for developers and investors, mainly due to the diverse range of revenue streams through integration, optimisation and flexible trading for battery storage owners, as well as an ambitious development plan for new battery storage projects. As of today, Italy’s battery storage capacity stands at 17.4 GWh. It is expected that Italy will reach 10.5 GW in battery storage capacity by 2030. 3 GW are already at an advanced stage and are expected to be operational within three years. To provide an overview of the sector and help its participants identify the most important battery storage developers, we have created a list of the world’s largest battery storage developers. Here, we present three major BESS developers from Italy as an excerpt from this list. When selecting developers, we considered their latest activities, their current development pipeline, their regional reach and their future strategic decisions.
1. Enel Green Power (Rome)
Enel Green Power is one of the world’s leading renewable energy developers and has long-standing expertise in developing BESS projects. The company’s first project was installed in Pietragalla in 2015. Today, out of their total capacity of over 67 GW in renewable energy sources, more than 3.3 GW are implemented in battery storage projects. Around 1.7 GW of this capacity is located in Europe. Many of Enel’s BESS projects are developed by its subsidiary Enel Libra Flexsys. In 2024, Enel signed a deal with Sosteneo to develop and manage 23 battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 1.7 GW.
2. Redelfi (Genoa)
Redelfi is an industrial company based in Genoa, founded in 2008. Since 2022, it has specialised in developing stand-alone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Italy and the USA. By 2026, Redelfi will have 1 GW of authorised capacity and is actively evaluating the possibility of retaining ownership of some of these assets. In terms of their technical focus, Redelfi is exploring flow batteries, sodium-ion cell systems, and lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) solutions.
3. Altea Green Power (Rivoli)
Altea Green Power is a Rivoli-based developer of photovoltaic (PV), agrivoltaic, wind and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. Its total development pipeline is around 7 GW. Of this, 1.5 GW comprises photovoltaic and wind projects, while 5.5 GW consists of BESS storage projects. In collaboration with Renewable Power Capital, Altea Green Power intends to deliver 1 GW of BESS capacity in Italy, aiming to achieve ready-to-build status for these projects within the next 2–4 years. One of their largest standalone projects is a 250 MW battery storage project in Piedmont, which is also one of the largest in the country.
