Germany is in the midst of an energy transition. The significant expansion of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, has resulted in an estimated 800 hours of negative electricity prices per year. For this reason, renewable energy companies are investing extensively in battery storage systems. Another important reason for the latest investments is the policy that large-scale storage facilities that go into operation by the end of 2028 will be exempt from grid fees for twenty years. In the first half of 2025, new large-scale battery storage facilities were installed with a power capacity of 509.5 megawatts and 690 megawatt hours. Investors in renewable energy, in particular, are shifting their investment strategies towards battery energy storage systems (BESS). To provide an overview of the sector and help its participants identify the most important battery storage investors, we have created a list of the world’s largest battery storage investors. Here, we present three major BESS investors from Germany as an excerpt from this list. When selecting investors, we considered their latest investment activities, their current investment portfolio, and their future strategic decisions.

1. MEAG (Munich)

MEAG is the asset management arm of insurance companies Munich Re and Ergo. It also offers expertise to institutional investors and private clients. MEAG manages all the main asset classes, including interest-bearing securities, equities, and real estate, as well as investments in renewable energy and infrastructure. MEAG is developing a stronger focus on battery storage projects, especially regarding its renewable energy investments. This year alone, MEAG has acquired a 92.5 MW/231 MWh battery storage system in Metelen and a 130 MW/354 MWh battery storage project in Höxter, North Rhine-Westphalia.

2. Aquila Capital (Hamburg)

Aquila Capital is one of the largest renewable energy investors in Germany, operating across all asset classes. Its BESS portfolio consists of 38 projects. These projects have a total capacity of 4.1 GW/6 GWh in operation or under development. Aquila Capital’s investments span seven countries in EMEA and APAC. One of their largest projects is a 220 MW battery storage project in South Australia. Looking to the future, Aquila Capital is seeking to maximise potential by connecting clean energy projects directly with BESS wherever possible.

3. Palladio Partners (Frankfurt am Main)

Palladio Partners is an owner-managed investment boutique specialising in global private markets, with a particular focus on infrastructure, private equity and private debt. A key part of its investment strategy is making strategic investments in renewable energy across wind, solar, and biomass. Recently, Palladio Partners has expanded its investment strategy to include BESS. Currently, they are investing 250 million euros in ordering the Aachen-based startup Voltfang to build and operate large-scale storage facilities
