List of the 3 largest battery storage developers from Bavaria

This article is based on our list of the largest battery storage developers in Europe which contains general contact details, company details as well as personal contact information.

The list is an excerpt from our detailed list of the world’s largest battery storage developers.

In the wake of the energy transition, battery storage systems are currently experiencing a boom in installation and planning. They enable solutions to a wide range of challenges associated with the expansion of PV and wind energy plants. For example, they offer the possibility of stabilising the power grid and preventing expensive grid interventions. In addition, BESS systems can ensure the profitability of wind and PV plants by absorbing the increasingly frequent negative electricity prices during midday hours. According to data from the Federal Network Agency, around 200 large-scale battery storage systems are planned in Bavaria alone. 100 of these are to be built by 2025. The renewables.digital Research Team has addressed this question based on our list of the largest battery storage developers in Germany. Who is the largest battery storage developer in Bavaria? According to the renewables.digital team, the largest Bavarian BESS developers are BayWa r.e. AG, Kyon Energy and Greenovative, which we present below.

1. BayWa r.e. AG (Munich)

BayWa r.e. is one of Germany’s largest developers in the field of renewable energies. In addition to onshore and offshore wind projects, solar projects and hybrid projects, the company is increasingly focusing on BESS systems. Its project pipeline includes 6 GW of wind and solar projects linked to battery storage systems. A further 3 GW are in the project pipeline for stand-alone energy storage projects. In the middle of the year, BayWa r.e. sold its largest BESS project with a 300 MW grid connection in the Netherlands.

2. Kyon Energy (Munich)

Kyon Energy, headquartered in Munich, is a leading developer of battery energy storage systems (BESS). To date, the company has successfully realized over 130 MW of storage capacity, with an additional 700 MW currently under construction and more than 1.7 GW in the ready-to-build phase. Its total project pipeline exceeds 7 GW. Kyon Energy provides comprehensive services across the entire development cycle, including site identification, grid connection planning, permitting, technology selection, project construction, commissioning, and long-term operation of battery storage assets. Their largest ready-to-build project are a BESS system in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, with a storage capacity of 105 MW and 210 MWh. Another project currently under construction is a battery park in Anfeld with a storage capacity of 137.5 MW and 275 MWh.

3. Greenovative GmbH (Nürnberg)

Greenovative is one of the leading developers of solar parks throughout Germany. The company has already successfully implemented over 100 solar park projects, with another 100 projects currently in the approval phase. Greenovative has also recognised the relevance of energy storage systems for its projects. From 2026, all solar parks are to be implemented as hybrid power plants as standard. As part of this, the company offers optimised concepts for large-scale battery storage systems. Greenovative is dedicated to planning, project development and financing, right through to plant construction and long-term operation, as well as electricity marketing. In the middle of the year, Greenovative commissioned its first green electricity storage facility with an output of 1.2 megawatts and a capacity of 4.0 megawatt hours. This was built in conjunction with the ‘Langenacker’ solar park in the Upper Palatinate region.
