List of 3 large Agri-PV Developers in Germany
In the process of the energy transition that Germany is undergoing, solar energy developers are increasingly faced with conflicts of interest. Therefore, those involved in the sector need progressive solutions to resolve conflicts between areas designated for renewable energy, agriculture, and nature conservation. Agri-PV projects are one possible solution to this problem. The aim is to make the most efficient use of agricultural land when expanding photovoltaics. Combining photovoltaic solutions with agriculture enables the sensible multiple use of land. Agri-PV electricity generation requires a maximum of 15 per cent of agricultural land, leaving at least 85 per cent available for agricultural use. Thanks to its many advantages, agri-PV is starting to play a more important role in the expansion of renewable energies in Germany. The following article presents three major German agri-PV developers, which are included in our list of the largest agri-PV developers in Germany.
1. SUNfarming GmbH (Berlin)
SunFarming is a Berlin-based developer and generator of renewable energy. As part of the Cube Green Energy Group, Sunfarming is a market leader in repowering onshore wind farms and developing photovoltaic projects with integrated battery storage systems and Agri-PV projects in Germany. Sunfarming has successfully realised around 700 MW of solar PV projects throughout Europe. Notably, Sunfarming is involved in Europe’s largest agri-photovoltaic plant in Brandenburg. The ‘Klimapark Steinhöfel’ project will generate a total of 753 MW of photovoltaic power across 500 hectares of agricultural land, spread over several sites, with commissioning planned for mid-2026.
2. Feldwerke GmbH (Munich)
Despite just being founded in 2023, Feldwerke already has seven projects in the approval phase and 250 MW of renewable energy projects in its pipeline. Their biggest project is located in Baden-Württemberg, where they are developing solar energy projects with a power of 32 MW on an area of 50 hectares. Two more 17 MW agri-PV projects are being developed in Bavaria.
3. BayWa r.e. AG (Munich)
BayWa r.e. is a major German player in the development of renewable energy projects, including wind and solar power, as well as Agri-PV. Their largest Agri-PV project is located in Babberich in the Netherlands, where BayWa r.e. has developed an Agri-PV project comprising 10,250 solar panels and offering 2.67 MWp of renewable energy. The project covers 3.3 hectares of a raspberry farm. The company is still in the early stages of developing its Agri-PV expertise, but is cooperating with Wageningen University (WUR) to expand in this area. Given its ambitious goals and resources, we identify BayWa r.e. as a key future player in Agri-PV in Germany.
Research for our directory of German Agri-PV Developers
We have intensive research expertise as part of the Isar Digital Ventures Group. Our research team dives deep into transactions and deals in the European and German renewable energy market and analyzes new solar, wind, or other projects. Columns included in the list of Agri-PV Developers in Germany
Agri-PV projects still represent a relatively niche part of renewable energy expansion in terms of total installed capacity. In our list, we have identified German renewable energy developers that focus on agri-PV, as well as those with individual projects and those experimenting with new solutions in this area. Besides that, our list includes all publicly available information or data points shared by the developers themselves. Specific information, listed below, such as installed capacity, is only included when stated on the website.
- Company data (Company Name, Legal form, Country of origin)
- Contact details (City, Address, Postcode, URL, E-Mail, Phone, Management)
- Area of investment (Onshore Wind, Offshore Wind, Solar, Hydro, Tidal, Hydrogen projects, Geothermal, Energy storage, Biomass)
- Type of Investor (Asset-/Investmentmanager, Family Office, Utility, IPP)
- Special Focus (PPAs, Repowering)
- Further information (Regional Focus, Founding year, installed capacity in MW)
