List of 3 major battery storage developers in the world
In the context of the renewable energy transition, the importance of energy and battery storage systems is crucial to its success. By storing surplus energy from renewable sources, energy storage projects enable that energy to be used during periods of low renewable generation. In doing so, they help to manage hourly and seasonal variations in renewable electricity output, optimise the use of renewable resources, and secure grid stability. In 2025 , new global battery energy storage systems (BESS) of 7.95 GW/22.2 GWh were installed. added. to the global networks. setting new record highs. Utility-scale gigawatt-hour projects in particular are becoming commonplace around the world and are expected to overtake the residential sector by 2026. These facts demonstrate the positive future that developers face in the battery storage sector. But who are the world’s leading battery storage developers? Our research team at Renewables.Digital identified CHN Energy, NextEra Energy and RWE as some of the largest battery storage developers in the world, based on installed capacity, project pipeline, and geographical reach. They are also among the largest renewable energy developers across all renewable asset classes, and therefore, part of our list of the world’s largest renewable energy developers.
1) CHN Energy (China)
Unsurprisingly, China is the leading global force in developing and expanding the global energy storage market, accounting for the majority of global energy storage. The country’s goal is to reach 180 GW of large-scale energy storage, primarily in the form of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS), by the end of 2027. As a state-owned renewable energy company, CHN Energy will be responsible for achieving these ambitious goals. To date, CHN has over 6,500 MW/14,700 MWh of new-type storage in operation across 167 projects.
2) NextEra Energy (USA)
NextEra Energy is already a long-term leader in energy production in North America. In particular, its renewable energy portfolio is the largest in North America. In recent years, the company has also become a leader in the development of energy storage systems. To date, NextEra Energy has over 3,000 MW of operational battery storage and a development backlog of 7.1 GW. Some of their largest projects include the 325 MW Desert Peak Energy Storage project in California and Plus Power’s 300.6 MW Rodeo Ranch Energy Storage project in Texas. NextEra states that it invests more in energy infrastructure than any other company in North America.
3) RWE (Germany)
RWE is one of Europe’s largest battery storage developers. The company develops, builds and operates large-scale battery storage facilities, as well as onshore and solar hybrid projects, across Europe, Australia and the USA. Around 1.2 GW (~2.7 GWh) of battery storage capacity has already been installed. One of its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects is located in North Rhine-Westphalia. It comprises 690 battery blocks and has a peak output of 220 MW. In terms of its American business, RWE has a total of 931 megawatts of battery storage projects under construction.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers
Investments in BESS technology are expected to total around 1.2 trillion USD. While developers identify optimal sites, manage the permitting process and deliver the projects, investors provide the capital that makes these projects possible. Battery storage is emerging as a key technology in the global energy transition. Its success depends on the collaboration between developers and investors. Renewables.digital recognises the importance of this collaboration and offers a list of the largest battery storage investors worldwide.
