List of 3 battery storage investors in the world
The growth of the battery storage industry in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal. With their ability to store surplus wind and solar energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are at the heart of the global energy transformation. With battery costs having fallen by around 90% since 2010, large-scale storage is now commercially viable. This is reflected in global battery storage development. In 2025, new BESS systems with a capacity of 7.95 GW/22.2 GWh were installed worldwide. Global installed storage capacity already exceeds 90 GW, marking a threefold increase in capacity in recent years. These factors make battery storage systems a lucrative investment for many in the renewable energy sector. Who are the world’s largest wind energy investors? Our renews.digital team has identified Blackrock, Brookfield Renewable Partners and State Development and Investment Group as the largest wind energy investors worldwide. They are also among the largest renewable energy investors across all renewable asset classes, and therefore, part of our list of the world’s largest renewable energy investors.
1) Blackrock (New York, USA)
BlackRock is one of the world’s largest asset management companies. Renewable energy investments are becoming an increasingly important part of their investment strategy. Looking at their current investments, it is clear that BlackRock is one of the biggest players focusing on renewable energy. battery storage companies. investors. in the world. For example, BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business acquired the large-scale battery energy storage systems developer Akaysha in 2022. The company also invested $500 million in Recurrent Energy, a developer of energy storage and solar projects, to support the development of its pipeline. BlackRock’s BlackRock Global Renewable Power III fund invested a further £200 million in KX Power to build up to two gigawatt hours of battery storage assets across the UK.
2) Brookfield Renewable Partners (Toronto, Canada)
The Canada-based global investment firm is the world’s largest private investor in the energy transition. It manages one of the world’s largest publicly listed platforms dedicated to renewable energy and decarbonisation solutions. They own and operate energy storage businesses across North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Their 80 GWh portfolio includes projects that are either operational or in development. Within two years, we expect to have commissioned an additional 20 GWh of battery projects, as batteries continue to enhance our global transition strategy. One of their most significant projects is a framework agreement with Cambridge Power in the UK for 800 MW of battery energy storage systems.
3) State Development and Investment Group (Beijing, China)
As expected, China has emerged as the dominant driver of global energy storage growth, accounting for the majority of new installations worldwide. The country’s goal is to achieve 180 GW of large-scale energy storage capacity, with lithium-ion battery systems forming the foundation of this expansion. The state-owned companies, such as State Development and Investment Group, are mainly responsible for the capital mobilisation. In terms of its energy storage portfolio, the company is one of the world’s most important investors. They have around 7.4 GW/17,000 MWh of new-type energy storage in operation, accounting for around 12.5% of China’s total.
Different types of green energy investors covered
Our list focuses on three main categories of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional clients, building and managing renewable energy portfolios for their funds. Their activities range from operating assets and marketing electricity through power purchase agreements (PPAs) or the open market to acquiring additional projects. By contrast, utilities acquire — and sometimes develop — renewable assets to secure a reliable, low-cost, carbon-neutral energy supply for their customers. Family offices, representing the investment arms of high-net-worth families, have more recently entered the sector and are increasingly committing capital to wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers
Investments in BESS technology are expected to total around 1.2 trillion USD. While developers identify optimal sites, manage the permitting process and deliver the projects, investors provide the capital that makes these projects possible. Battery storage is emerging as a key technology in the global energy transition. Its success depends on the collaboration between developers and investors. Renewables.digital recognises the importance of this collaboration and offers a list of the largest battery storage investors worldwide.
