List of 3 large battery storage developers in Germany
As renewable energy capacity in Germany expands rapidly, the need for energy storage is also growing. This is particularly relevant given the volatility of renewable energy throughout the day and the seasons. To secure a constant energy supply, the demand for battery storage is expected to continue growing. In addition, battery storage systems (BESS) provide renewable energy suppliers with the opportunity to optimise revenue from electricity feed-in. Progress in expanding BESS is already visible. Germany’s battery storage capacity has surged by over 150% in just two years, reaching approximately 20 GWh. In total, 1.8 billion battery storage systems have been installed in Germany. Furthermore, more than 600 commercial storage systems and over 400 large-scale systems are in the planning stage. In our list of the largest battery storage developers in Germany, we put together the most important players in this segment. Here you can read about three of the biggest ones.
1. RWE AG (Essen)
RWE stands among Europe’s largest and most experienced developers of battery energy storage systems. The company develops, builds, and operates large-scale battery facilities as well as hybrid projects that combine storage with solar and onshore wind assets. Its activities span across Europe, Australia, and the United States, reflecting a global presence. To date, RWE has installed around 1.2 GW (2.7 GWh) of battery storage capacity. In total, RWE has 39 battery storage projects that have either been implemented or are in development. One of its flagship projects is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, comprising 690 battery blocks with a total output of 220 MW. In the United States, the company is currently constructing an additional 931 MW of storage capacity, further strengthening its position as a key player in the international battery storage market. Their largest project in the US is the Westside Canal Complex, which has a capacity of 250 MW/1,000 MWh.
2. Kyon Energy Solutions GmbH (Munich)
Kyon Energy is a Munich-based BESS developer that has already developed more than 130 MW of energy storage solutions. A further 700 MW is under construction and more than 1.7 GW is ready to be built. The total project pipeline amounts to 7 GW. Kyon Energy fulfils all the necessary services in the development process, from site development and grid connection planning to building permit development, technology selection, project construction, commissioning and the operation of battery storage systems.
3. ABO Energy GmbH & Co. KGaA (Wiesbaden)
Abo Energy is a developer of wind, solar, hydrogen and battery storage projects. The company develops independent battery storage systems, as well as hybrid energy systems. To date, Abo Energy has developed 100 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions and has a further 4 GW under development. ABO Energy handles all stages of the project planning and construction process for battery storage systems. One of their largest projects is a stand-alone battery storage system for grid stabilization with a capacity of 50 megawatts and 25 megawatt-hours in Ireland.
The leading battery storage developers in Germany
Battery storage developers are playing a crucial role in Germany’s energy transition. Without adequate storage, the volatility of renewable energy sources threatens the country’s energy security. As a result, the deployment of BESS will play a critical role in the energy transition and BESS developers will take on a more important role. Our list is the most extensive database of Germany’s energy storage developers. Our database is a part of our list of the largest renewable energy developers from Germany, which also includes developers of Solar Energy, Hydrogen, Hydro and wind energy projects.
