Description
India’s renewable energy market in 2026
India is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets in the world and renewable energy developers in India are at the centre of this expansion. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country’s installed renewable energy capacity reached nearly 300GW in August 2026, including large hydropower.
Solar power is by far the largest segment with 168 GW of installed capacity. Of this, 124.0 GW are ground-mounted solar parks, 32.6 GW are grid-connected rooftop systems, 4.8 GW are solar components of hybrid projects and 6.6 GW are off-grid installations. Wind power contributes 58.5 GW, large hydropower 52 GW (including 7.4 GW of pumped storage), bioenergy around 11.7 GW and small hydropower 5.2 GW.
Growth has accelerated sharply. In the financial year 2025–26, India added a record 55.3 GW of non-fossil capacity, almost twice the previous record of 29.5 GW set in 2024–25. The momentum continues: between April and August 2026 alone, another 20.9 GW of renewable capacity was installed, including 17.8 GW of solar. According to IRENA’s Renewable Energy Statistics 2026, India now ranks third worldwide in installed renewable energy capacity. The government’s official target is 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, which means that close to 200 GW of additional capacity still has to be built.
This build-out is led by a group of large solar and wind developers and independent power producers (IPPs): conglomerate-backed platforms, state-owned utilities and internationally listed pure players that compete in central and state-level tenders and sign long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with utilities and corporate offtakers. Below, we present five of the top renewable energy developers in India.
Top 5 renewable energy developers in India
1. Adani Green Energy Limited (Ahmedabad, India)
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), part of the Adani Group, is the largest renewable energy company in India by operational capacity. Since commissioning its first project in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016, AGEL has built its portfolio predominantly through greenfield development. In July 2026, the company crossed the mark of 20 GW of operational capacity, consisting of around 14.2 GW of solar, 2.7 GW of wind and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects, which generate more than 52 billion units of clean electricity per year. In the financial year 2025–26 alone, AGEL added 5.1 GW of new capacity , most of it at its flagship Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat, which the company describes as the world’s largest renewable energy plant, and a further 438 MW of solar in Rajasthan. AGEL is targeting 50 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
2. Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (Mumbai, India)
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), also known as Tata Power Renewables, is the renewable energy subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited and part of the Tata Group. TPREL’s utility portfolio has grown to 12.3 GW, of which more than 7 GW are already operational around 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind. A further 5.3 GW (2.2 GW solar and 3.1 GW wind) is scheduled for phased commissioning over the next 6 to 24 months. Besides utility-scale solar and wind parks, the company develops floating solar and battery energy storage projects. TPREL also benefits from the group’s integration along the value chain: Tata Power operates 4.9 GW of solar cell and module manufacturing capacity and has signed 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage projects.
3. ReNew Energy Global (Gurugram, India)
ReNew was founded in 2011 by Sumant Sinha, who still leads the company as Chairman and CEO. In 2021, it became the first Indian renewable energy company to be listed on Nasdaq. As of May 2026, ReNew’s clean energy portfolio amounts to around 20.2 GW, including projects under development, with approximately 10 GW already commissioned, making it one of the largest renewable energy companies in India. ReNew operates more than 150 utility-scale wind, solar, hydro and hybrid projects across nine Indian states and, according to its own figures, accounts for around 9% of India’s total renewable energy generation. Besides round-the-clock renewable power, its offering includes corporate PPAs, green credits, energy storage, green hydrogen, transmission and solar PV module manufacturing.
4. JSW Energy (Mumbai, India)
JSW Energy, part of the JSW Group, has evolved from a thermal power producer into one of India’s fastest-growing renewable energy platforms. In September 2026, the company crossed 15 GW of total operational capacity. Renewables now account for more than 60% of the portfolio with around 9,000 MW: over 3000 MWW of wind, more than 2,400 MW of solar, more than 1,700 MW of hybrid and 1,800 MW of hydro capacity, including Karcham Wangtoo in Himachal Pradesh, India’s largest private hydro project. With a locked-in portfolio of 32.4 GW, including 13.4 GW under construction, JSW Energy is pursuing its target of 30 GW of generation capacity and around 40 GWh of energy storage by 2030. The company has also moved into equipment manufacturing and operates a wind blade factory in Halol, Gujarat.
5. NTPC Green Energy Limited (Greater Noida, India)
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) is the umbrella company for the green energy business of NTPC, India’s largest state-owned power utility. NGEL develops projects both organically and through acquisitions and joint ventures, for example with ONGC Green, Indian Oil and MAHAGENCO. The company currently operates more than 10.8 GW of renewable capacity across 38 fully commissioned projects, while another 48 projects are under execution, including solar parks in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Its portfolio covers utility-scale and floating solar, hybrid projects, onshore and offshore wind, energy storage and green hydrogen. NGEL aims to reach 60 GW of renewable capacity by FY 2032.
What do renewable energy developers in India do?
Almost every utility-scale solar park, wind farm and hybrid project in India is based on the work of a renewable energy developer. Developers secure land and grid connectivity, win tenders or negotiate power purchase agreements, build the installations and then either operate them as independent power producers or sell them to renewable energy investors. For investors and M&A teams, developers are the most important source of acquisition targets and co-investment opportunities; for suppliers, EPC contractors and service providers, they are key customers.
Our list of renewable energy developers in India gives a comprehensive overview of the 70 largest companies in the market, from conglomerates and state-owned utilities to specialised solar and wind pure players. It is the ideal starting point for business development, M&A, procurement, strategy and market research teams.
