List of 5 large renewable energy developers in Spain
Spain’s strong sun attracts not only tourists but also renewable energy developers. With many hours of sunshine per day and a long summer season, the conditions are ideal for photovoltaic solar farms. For this reason, many renewable energy developers are based on the Spanish mainland, accelerating the improvement of the technological implementation of renewable energy projects. Five developers are profiled below, based on the pioneering role of Spanish developers.
1. Iberdrola (Bilbao)
Iberdrola is a world leader in renewable energy, with more than 56,000 MW of renewable capacity. The company plans to invest €21.5 billion by 2026, focusing on offshore wind, onshore wind and solar projects. Iberdrola is also promoting green hydrogen technologies and large-scale renewable initiatives such as the East Anglia Hub and the Tâmega hydroelectric project. These investments support the company’s commitment to the energy transition and a low-carbon economy.
2. EDP Renewables (Madrid)
As the world’s third largest wind energy producer, the Madrid-based developer is an expert in the realisation of onshore and offshore wind farms. To further drive the energy transition, EDP Renewables is also developing solar farms and is constantly striving to become a global leader in renewable energy generation. The listed company is committed to innovation, sustainability and humanisation while striving for further growth and operational excellence. Its current portfolio has resulted in a total installed capacity of almost 15 GW. EDP Renovaveis SA has won a 20-year contract-for-difference (CfD) for 100 MW of wind power in an auction in Italy. The CfDs concern three onshore wind projects in the country’s south. The three wind parks are expected to become operational by 2026.
3. Matrix Renewables (Madrid)
Matrix Renewables currently manages a diverse portfolio totaling 15.5 GW of renewable energy projects, energy storage, and green hydrogen initiatives. These projects span various stages of development—including operational, under construction, near-ready-to-build, and in development—across Europe, the United States, and Latin America. In Spain the company operates 64 Projects, with 4,119 MWp.
4. Prodiel (Seville)
The Seville-based group was founded in 1994 and has developed 7.5GW of solar energy to date. Prodiel is responsible for the development of one of the largest solar parks in the Iberian Peninsula. The 300MW site was developed in 2020 and comprises 554,000 solar modules. In April 2022, the group announced a joint venture with Swiss investment group Smartenergy. The new partnership, called Greenfield PV, will develop 5GW of solar panels in Spain and the team will consist of 50 solar development specialists. In total, the company has realised more than 45 large-scale solar projects.
5. Repsol (Madrid)
The Spanish energy company, which employs more than 25,000 people, has accepted its responsibility in the energy transition by refocusing its strategy and expanding into renewable energy generation. In doing so, Repsol shares the overall goal of a sustainable future by aiming for net-zero emission status within the next 30 years. Based on this commitment, the Madrid-based developer has turned to innovative solutions, focusing on applied research for new technologies. Repsol now has 12 hydroelectric plants, 6 wind farms, and 7 solar projects. By 2027, the company aims to operate and develop renewable energy projects with a capacity of 9 to 10 GW.
Developers for Renewable energy in Spain
Solar and wind power are just two of the renewable energy sources needed to combat climate change. With demand for electricity rising steadily and set to increase further due to new technologies such as electric cars, the renewable energy market is a promising one for the future. Spain, a sunny and windy country, offers many opportunities for the integration of green energy into the electricity grid – and a large number of project developers to design and plan these projects. Our list enables landowners, investors and other companies to find suitable partners.
