Description

List of 5 large renewable energy investors in the world.

Renewable energy is already playing a crucial role in the energy transformation that the global economy needs in order to avoid a climate crisis, which would pose a significant threat to the global economy. To succeed, the industry requires vast sums of capital. The potential financial and economic benefits are very obvious. Solar and wind power are already the cheapest sources of new electricity generation in almost every country. Last year, renewables accounted for over 90 per cent of new power additions. The sheer size and importance of the energy transition make it a lucrative investment opportunity for private investors. As a result, clean energy investments reached a record-breaking US$2.1 trillion in 2024, overtaking fossil fuels for the first time, and during the first half of 2025, global investment in new renewable energy development reached a record $386 billion, marking a 10% increase compared to last year. Depending on local policies and expected investment returns, investors put their money into a wide variety of renewable energy sources. These include wind power on land and at sea, solar energy, hydroelectric power, biomass, and geothermal energy. Energy storage is also becoming increasingly important in making renewable energy more usable. Based on their investments, not only is the current energy supply being increasingly converted to renewable energy, but also the process of improvement and further development can be driven forward. This raises the question: What are the biggest renewable energy investors in the world? Our renewables.digital resarch team identified Brookfield Renewable Partners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners P/S (CIP), Maquire Asset Management, Greenbacker Capital and Actis as the biggest renewable energy investors in the world. Here we present these five in detail.

1) Brookfield Renewable Partners (Toronto, Canada)

Brookfield Renewable, the Canadian-based global investment firm and the world’s largest private investor in the global energy transition, operates one of the world’s largest publicly traded platforms for renewable power and decarbonisation solutions. Its portfolio consists of hydroelectric, wind, solar and distributed energy projects, as well as sustainable solutions, spanning five continents. Altogether, Brookfield has 137 billion USD in assets under management, totalling 46,000 megawatts of generating capacity. They invest on behalf of sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, family offices and individuals.

2) Macquire Asset Management (Sydney, Australia)

Macquire Asset Management is a Sydney-based asset manager that invests in multiple asset classes. One of their main areas of focus is green investment, particularly in renewable energy. With 20 years of experience, Macquire Asset Management focuses on investments in renewable energy developers around the world, as well as in single renewable energy projects. Their portfolio includes multiple offshore and onshore wind farms and solar farms across the globe, as well as multiple renewable energy platforms and renewable energy developers such as Desri and Island Green Power.

3) Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Nordhavn, Denmark)

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is located in Nordhavn, Denmark. Since its foundation in 2012, it has become the world’s largest dedicated fund manager within greenfield renewable energy investments and a global leader in offshore wind. CIP’s funds focus on investments in offshore and onshore wind, solar PV, biomass and energy-from-waste, transmission and distribution, reserve capacity, storage, advanced bioenergy and Power-to-X. In total, CIP manages 13 funds, in which more than 200 institutional investors have invested. To date, it has raised EUR 33 billion for investment purposes.

4) Schroders Greencoat (London, United Kingdom )

Founded in 2009, Schroders Greencoat is one of the world’s largest dedicated renewable infrastructure managers, with a presence in the UK, Europe and the US. Greencoat has $111 billion in assets under management across all sectors, especially in private equity, private debt, credit alternatives, real estate and infrastructure. Its infrastructure assets are valued at $14.9 billion and comprise more than 440 renewable energy assets. Its UK Wind Fund has invested in 49 wind farms with a net generating capacity of 1,610 MW, while its UK Solar Fund manages a further 1.1 GW of generation capacity across over 147 solar farms. Schroders Greencoat also invests in Europe, where it has 1 GW of renewable capacity, and in the US, where it has a further 500 MW of renewable energy plants.

5) State Development and Investment Group (Beijing, China)

China is the world’s leading producer of renewable energy. This is accompanied by significant investment in the renewable energy sector. The State Development and Investment Group Co., Ltd. is one of the main investors. SDIC is a centrally managed, state-owned investment holding company established in China in 1995. Not only does SDIC hold a major renewable energy portfolio containing wind, solar and hydro energy plants in China, it has also invested in renewable energy projects all over the world.

Different types of green energy investors covered

Our list focuses on three main categories of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional clients, building and managing renewable energy portfolios for their funds. Their activities range from operating assets and marketing electricity through power purchase agreements (PPAs) or the open market to acquiring additional projects. By contrast, utilities acquire — and sometimes develop — renewable assets to secure a reliable, low-cost, carbon-neutral energy supply for their customers. Family offices, representing the investment arms of high-net-worth families, have more recently entered the sector and are increasingly committing capital to wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers

Renewable energy developers and investors around the world are working together to speed up the energy transition. Developers are responsible for identifying project sites, securing permits and constructing wind, solar and storage assets. Investors ranging from institutional funds and asset managers to utilities and family offices, on the other hand, provide the necessary capital to make these projects a reality. Supportive policy frameworks, the growth of green finance and ambitious climate targets worldwide ensure that renewable projects are technically doable and financially attractive.  Recognising the importance of this cooperation, renewables.digital provides a list of the largest renewable energy developers in the world.
