List of 3 large renewable energy investors in the UK

The United Kingdom is one of the most important players in the renewable energy market. Not only has the government set ambitious goals for the future of renewables in the power market, but also investments are as high as ever. The UK has invested heavily in research and development of new technologies and is considered a pioneer in many, for example for green hydrogen. The favorable location for renewable energy, with strong winds and a long coastline, makes the UK an ideal location for offshore wind farms, attracting investments from all over the world. Accordingly, the investment market in the UK is highly competitive – even nationally there is a large number of investors with great expertise.  The following article presents three renewable energy investors based in the UK.

1. Lightsource BP (London)

Lightsource BP is one of the world’s largest renewable energy players and – as the name suggests – specialises in solar energy. As a project developer, the company is ranked third worldwide, and Lightsource BP, based in London, also acts as an international investor in multiple renewable energy projects.

Update 2024: End of November 2023, bp has finalized a deal to acquire the remaining 50.03% stake in Lightsource bp.

2. Green Investment Group Limited (Edinburgh)

Green Investment Group Limited is part of the Macquarie Group and is also one of the most important players in the UK renewable energy market. Based in Edinburgh, the company has a diversified portfolio and invests in energy storage systems and even green hydrogen in addition to the more traditional assets (offshore and onshore) wind and solar. Since its foundation in 2012, the investor has been able to build up a project pipeline with a considerable 85GW.

3. Cubico Sustainable Investments (London)

Cubico Sustainable Investments is a globally active renewables company. As the name suggests, Cubico focuses on sustainable investments with a focus on onshore wind and solar energy projects. Founded in 2015, the company is based in London and operates mainly in Europe, Australia and the Americas.

Update 2024: Cubico Sustainable Investments has made significant moves in Mexico, acquiring Renantis Mexico and forming a strategic partnership with Sowitec Group. These transactions bring Cubico’s development portfolio to 2.2 GW, in addition to its three operational projects, reinforcing its commitment to advancing renewable energy in the country.

Finding the right investors for energy projects in the United Kingdom

The list is ideal for finding suitable UK-based investors for your renewable energy project. By using the filter option in our Excel list, you can find suitable investors according to your individual needs. For example, with a few clicks you can identify which renewable energy investors headquartered in London are focused on solar projects. Or you can filter for investors who specialise in green hydrogen projects.

Different types of green energy investors covered

Our list mainly includes three different types of renewable energy investors: asset- and investment-managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers are investing in the name of institutional investors and managing a renewables portfolio for their funds. That includes operating the portfolio, selling the energy through PPAs and on the free market, and acquiring new assets. Utilities are acquiring – and in some cases building on their own – renewable assets to ensure CO2-neutral and cheap energy supply for their customers. Family offices – the investment firms of high net worth families – recently started to invest in renewables and also to acquire wind and solar parks.

Included columns in our investor database

Our list includes all renewable energy investors from our database, all information that is available on specific investor pages, and even more data points (like executives). The list includes all publicly available information or data points shared by the investors themselves. For instance, specific information like installed capacity are only included when stated on the website.
