List of 3 large renewable energy investors in the UK
The UK is one of the most important players in the renewable energy market. Not only has the government set ambitious targets for the future of renewables in the electricity market, but investment is at an all-time high. The UK has invested heavily in the research and development of new technologies and is a pioneer in many areas, such as green hydrogen. The UK’s favourable location for renewable energy, with strong winds and a long coastline, makes it an ideal location for offshore wind farms, attracting investment from around the world. As a result, the investment market in the UK is very competitive – even nationally, there are a large number of investors with great expertise. The following article profiles three UK-based renewable energy investors.
1. Lightsource BP (London)
Lightsource BP is one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies and, as its name suggests, specialises in solar energy. At the end of November 2023, BP finalized a deal to acquire the remaining 50.03% stake in Lightsource bp, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of BP. The company is the world’s third largest project developer and an international investor in several renewable energy projects.
2. Green Investment Group Limited (Edinburgh)
Green Investment Group Limited is part of the Macquarie Group and is also one of the most important players in the UK renewable energy market. Based in Edinburgh, the company has a diversified portfolio and invests in energy storage systems and even green hydrogen in addition to the more traditional assets (offshore and onshore) wind and solar. Since its foundation in 2012, the investor has been able to build up a project pipeline with a considerable 85GW.
3. Cubico Sustainable Investments (London)
Cubico Sustainable Investments is a globally active renewable company. As the name suggests, Cubico focuses on sustainable investments with a focus on onshore wind and solar energy projects. Founded in 2015, the company is based in London and operates mainly in Europe, Australia and the Americas. Besides their core markets, Cubico Sustainable Investments has made significant moves in Mexico, acquiring Renantis Mexico and forming a strategic partnership with Sowitec Group. These transactions bring Cubico’s development portfolio to 2.2 GW, in addition to its three operational projects, reinforcing its commitment to advancing renewable energy in the country.

Different types of green energy investors covered
Our list includes three main types of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities and family offices. Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional investors and manage a portfolio of renewable energy assets for their funds. This includes operating the portfolio, selling energy through PPAs and on the open market, and acquiring new assets. Utilities are acquiring – and in some cases building – renewable assets to provide carbon-neutral and affordable energy to their customers. Family offices – the investment firms of wealthy families – have recently started to invest in renewables, including the acquisition of wind and solar farms.
