List of 3 major solar energy developers in the world
The global energy transition is advancing inexorably. Examining global data on the growth of renewable energy sources confirms this is not an exaggeration, but a fact. Solar energy, in particular, is becoming steadily cheaper and more lucrative. Consequently, solar energy is expanding worldwide. While the installed solar energy capacity in 2024 is expected to remain around 600 GW, the IEA is already forecasting a global renewable power capacity of 4,600 GW for 2030, approximately 80% of which will be accounted for by PV solar energy. Solar energy developers play a vital role in making these projects a reality. They are therefore key to the success of the global energy transition. But who are the world’s leading solar energy developers? Our research team at Renewables.Digital identified State Power Investment Corporation Limited, TotalEnergies and Adani Green Energy as the largest solar energy developers in the world, based on installed capacity, project pipeline, and geographical reach. They are also among the largest renewable energy developers across all renewable asset classes, and therefore, part of our list of the world’s largest renewable energy developers.
1) State Power Investment Corporation Limited (China)
China is undoubtedly the world’s leading producer and developer of renewable energy, particularly in terms of solar energy expansion. This is mainly driven by China’s state-owned companies. The State Power Investment Corporation Limited is one of China’s five power generation groups. Its generation technologies include photovoltaic (PV), wind, nuclear, hydro, coal, gas and biomass. They rank themselves as the world’s largest owner of solar PV capacity. In addition to its activities in China, the company operates in a further 47 countries, where it has developed almost 5 GW of clean energy.
2) TotalEnergies (France)
TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company. With over 100,000 employees and more than 31 GW of gross installed electricity capacity, TotalEnergies is a global leader in the energy sector. The company is also a prime example of the global energy transition. Formerly known for its oil business, TotalEnergies’ renewable energy capacity has reached 26 GW. Solar energy in particular plays a crucial role in the company’s renewable energy transition. In 2023, TotalEnergies was ranked as the world’s leading solar developer, with a portfolio representing a total capacity of 41.3 gigawatts (GW), including 12 GW already in operation. One of the company’s largest projects is the development of an 800-megawatt solar plant in Al Kharsaah, Qatar. This project is crucial to achieving the company’s goal of reaching 100 GW of gross installed renewable power generation capacity by 2030.
3) Adani Green Energy (India)
As India’s largest renewable energy company, Adani Green Energy is a major player in the Asian renewable energy sector. As of June 2025, it had an operational capacity of 15,000 megawatts (MW). The largest part of its portfolio is solar energy, reaching 11,000 MW in 2025. Adani aims to reach a renewable portfolio of 50 GW by 2030. One of the company’s largest commissioned projects to achieve this goal is the 648 MW Kamuthi solar farm in Tamil Nadu, one of the world’s largest solar power projects in a single location.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers
Renewable energy developers and investors worldwide are forming strategic partnerships to ensure the global energy transition’s success. Developers are responsible for identifying suitable locations, navigating permitting processes and constructing wind, solar and storage projects. Investors, including institutional funds, utilities and family offices, provide the capital that makes these projects possible. Supportive policy frameworks, the expansion of green finance and ambitious climate goals across regions ensure that renewable energy investments are technically feasible and financially sustainable. Renewables.digital recognises the importance of this collaboration and offers a list of the largest solar energy investors worldwide.
