list of the largest solar energy investors in the world

List of 3 major solar energy investors in the world

Solar energy is already one of the world’s most important energy sources. In 2024, global solar installations reached nearly 600 GW. The rate at which capacity is growing is enormous. In comparison to 2023, the global solar capacity increased by 33%. The total global installed solar capacity reached 2 TW in 2024. For the further expansion of solar energy that the global community aims for, investors play a crucial role. While developers build and operate projects, investors provide the capital that transforms plans into operational wind, solar and storage assets. So they are a key fixture for the current players in solar energy. But who are the biggest investors in solar energy? The research team at renewables.digital identified Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Macquarie Asset Management as three of the largest investors in solar energy. They are also among the largest renewable energy investors across all renewable asset classes, and therefore, part of our list of the world’s largest renewable energy investors.

1) Brookfield Renewable Partners (Toronto, Canada)

Brookfield Renewable is a Canada-based global investment firm and the world’s largest private investor in the global energy transition. Altogether, Brookfield has 137 billion USD in assets under management, totalling 46,000 megawatts of generating capacity across hydroelectric, wind and solar energy, as well as energy storage systems. Regarding its solar investments, Brookfield has already invested in more than 300 facilities with an installed capacity of around 14,200 MW. It has also committed to further investments of 128,900 MW in projects under development. In addition to making direct investments in various projects, Brookfield also invests in renewable energy companies, such as the global solar energy developer X-ELIO.

2) Macquire Asset Management (Sydney, Australia)

In addition to providing long-term financing for projects such as the $350 million Nexamp, Inc. deal for the construction of utility-scale solar and battery storage projects, the asset manager primarily invests in renewable energy assets through its portfolio companies. These include major solar energy developers such as Apex Energies, Island Green Power and Reden Solar. One direct project investment is the Parque Solar Coahuila in Mexico.

3) SPIC (State Power Investment Corporation, Ltd.) (Beijing, China)

China is renowned for its leadership in the global investment and development of renewable energy. SPIC (State Power Investment Corporation, Ltd.) is one of China’s largest state-owned power companies and is responsible for renewable energy investments. In 2024, SPIC reported a record 72.71% share of clean energy in its installed capacity, as well as over USD 23.4 billion invested in clean energy. Its solar portfolio includes the 850 MWp Longyangxia hydro-solar hybrid and the 500 MW Golmud PV power plant, both of which are located in Qinghai.

Different types of green energy investors covered

Our list focuses on three main categories of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional clients, building and managing renewable energy portfolios for their funds. Their activities range from operating assets and marketing electricity through power purchase agreements (PPAs) or the open market to acquiring additional projects. By contrast, utilities acquire — and sometimes develop — renewable assets to secure a reliable, low-cost, carbon-neutral energy supply for their customers. Family offices, representing the investment arms of high-net-worth families, have more recently entered the sector and are increasingly committing capital to wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers

Renewable energy developers and investors around the world are working together to speed up the energy transition. Developers are responsible for identifying project sites, securing permits and constructing wind, solar and storage assets. Investors ranging from institutional funds and asset managers to utilities and family offices, on the other hand, provide the necessary capital to make these projects a reality. Supportive policy frameworks, the growth of green finance and ambitious climate targets worldwide ensure that renewable projects are technically doable and financially attractive.  Recognising the importance of this cooperation, renewables.digital provides a list of the largest solar energy developers in the world.
