Description
List of 3 major wind energy investors in the world
In addition to solar and hydro energy, wind energy is another key source of renewable energy. By 2024, the total installed capacity worldwide had exceeded 1,100 GW. China and Brazil, in particular, are investing heavily in new wind parks. While onshore wind energy remains the dominant form, offshore wind farms are becoming increasingly important for the global energy transition. The EU alone plans to install 86–89 GW by 2030 and 355–366 GW by 2050. In these dynamic markets, investors can find opportunities for lucrative returns on investment. For those in the wind energy sector, the question arises: Who are the world’s largest wind energy investors? Our renews.digital team has identified Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, CHN Energy Investment Group and Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners as the largest wind energy investors worldwide. They are also among the largest renewable energy investors across all renewable asset classes, and therefore, part of our list of the world’s largest renewable energy investors.
1) Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Nordhavn, Denmark)
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is a Danish fund manager specialising in greenfield energy investments. CIP has EUR 33 billion under management across its 13 funds. Each of these funds invests in the main trends of the energy transition. Their Fund CI III, with a size of 3.5bn Euro was the largest financial investor within offshore wind, presence on four continents. Another major CIP project is the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm in the US. This offshore wind farm has an 800 MW capacity.
2) CHN Energy Investment Group (Beijing, China)
The CHN Energy Investment Group Co. Ltd is a Chinese mining and energy company owned by the state. The company has a significant investment in Longyuan Power, the largest wind power producer in China and Asia. It was formed in 2017 through the merger of Shenhua Group and China Guodian. It is a pioneer in the expansion of wind energy in China, channelling state capital through its flagship renewable energy company, China Longyuan Power. To date, more than 30 GW of wind energy has been developed in this way.
3) Brookfield Renewable Partners (Toronto, Canada)
Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners is one of the largest investors in both solar and wind energy. To date, Brookfield has invested in over 260 facilities with a combined capacity of 17,300 MW. These projects are located across North and South America, Europe and Asia. Further investments are being made in projects with a capacity of 44,300 MW. In addition to special projects, Brookfield mainly invests through portfolio companies such as OnPath Energy.
Different types of green energy investors covered
Our list focuses on three main categories of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional clients, building and managing renewable energy portfolios for their funds. Their activities range from operating assets and marketing electricity through power purchase agreements (PPAs) or the open market to acquiring additional projects. By contrast, utilities acquire — and sometimes develop — renewable assets to secure a reliable, low-cost, carbon-neutral energy supply for their customers. Family offices, representing the investment arms of high-net-worth families, have more recently entered the sector and are increasingly committing capital to wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers
Renewable energy developers and investors around the world are working together to speed up the energy transition. Developers are responsible for identifying project sites, securing permits and constructing wind, solar and storage assets. Investors ranging from institutional funds and asset managers to utilities and family offices, on the other hand, provide the necessary capital to make these projects a reality. Supportive policy frameworks, the growth of green finance and ambitious climate targets worldwide ensure that renewable projects are technically doable and financially attractive. Recognising the importance of this cooperation, renewables.digital provides a list of the largest wind energy developers in the world.
