the biggest renewable energy developers in the world

List of 10 large global renewable energy developers

Currently, the world is undergoing significant changes in the energy sector. The era of fossil fuels is slowly coming to an end, which is creating opportunities for new renewable energy sources. Since 2000, the share of electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, has increased from 19% to over 30%. By 2030, it is thought that renewable energy will account for 45% of the world’s energy supply. Renewable energy developers have a very important role in this change. They are responsible for designing, building and operating renewable energy facilities. Renewable energy developers are key to making the switch to sustainable energy. Here we present ten of the biggest renewable energy developers in the world. They include state-owned and private companies that develop major renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and hydro, as well as other renewable energy sources, like tidal, hydrogen, geothermal energy and biomass. In the following, our experienced renewables.digital research team has investigated the 10 largest renewables developers in the world, and describes them and their activities.

1. China Three Gorges Corporation (China)

The China Three Gorges Corporation is a Chinese state-owned power company established in 1993. Its main task was the construction of the Three Gorges Dam project, the world’s largest hydroelectric power plant. Since the dam’s completion, CTG has expanded its business to include the development of other hydroelectric projects, as well as solar and wind projects. Thanks to these large-scale projects, CTG has emerged as the world’s largest hydropower development and operation enterprise, as well as China’s leading clean energy group. CTG is now active in 40 countries and has installed 125 GW of clean energy.

2. State Power Investment Corporation Limited (China)

The State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC) is one of China’s five power generation groups. SPIC operates across all major power generation technologies, including photovoltaic (PV), wind, nuclear, hydro, coal, gas and biomass, and claims to be the world’s largest PV power capacity owner. The energy generator owns more than 67 GW of PV power and has an additional installed capacity of more than 24 GW of wind energy. In addition to its activities in China, the company operates in a further 47 countries, where it has developed almost 5 GW of clean energy.

3. China Datang Corporation Limited (China)

Founded in 2002, China Datang Corporation Limited is one of China’s five power generation groups. Half of the company’s 200 GW of installed capacity is clean energy, bringing its renewable energy portfolio to around 100 GW. The company operates in over 10 countries and regions, including Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Singapore.

4. Enel Green Power (Italy)

The Italian renewable energy developer is one of the largest in Europe and worldwide. As of today, its total renewable capacity exceeds 65 GW, comprising a variety of resources, including wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal. The company manages over 1,300 power plants across five continents and has operational or under-construction assets in 19 countries.

5. Iberdrola, S.A. (Spain)

Since its creation in 1992, Iberdrola has become one of the world’s largest renewable energy developers. To date, the company’s installed renewable energy capacity exceeds 56,600 MW. Iberdrola aims to increase this to 100,000 MW in the future. In addition to its core market in Spain, Iberdrola has branches in the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil and Mexico, and manages projects worldwide.

6. Engie SA (France)

The purpose of the Paris-based company is to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral world. Its renewable energy portfolio consists of onshore and offshore wind, solar and hydro energy. In 2025, Engie has a renewables and base capacity of 51.6 GW. A further 8.5 GW is under construction across 101 ongoing projects. This aligns with its goal of adding 6 GW of renewable energy annually to reach 80 GW of installed capacity by 2030.

7. Masdar (UAE)

Masdar is a global renewable energy company that develops clean energy solutions, including utility-scale power plants, community grid systems, and energy storage systems. Masdar`s portfolio has combined project capacity exceeding 51 GW, with a diverse portfolio spanning solar, wind and geothermal energy. Masdar maintains a strong global presence, with offices around the world and projects in more than 40 countries. Masdar recently reinforced its position in the European renewable energy market by completing the acquisition of Terna Energy.

8. NextEra Energy (USA)

NextEra Energy has been active in the American market for over 100 years. Throughout this time, the company has continually shifted its business towards new technologies. The Florida-based company is now focused on renewable energy and has become America’s premier clean energy leader. NextEra Energy has 33,000 megawatts of operating wind and solar energy, as well as 3,000 megawatts of battery storage capacity.

9. Invenergy LLC. (USA)

The US-based company’s goal is to accelerate the adoption of cleaner, more reliable and affordable energy. To achieve this, the company is developing renewable energy projects, with a focus on solar, onshore and offshore wind, hydrogen and battery storage systems. Regarding solar projects, the company has already developed 7.5 GW, with a further 30 GW in its project pipeline. A further 19 GW has been developed in onshore wind energy projects, with over 6 GW of offshore wind projects in development. Ivenergy has developed 3,000 megawatt-hours of storage.
