In addition to regulations, bans and incentives for companies as well as for individuals, innovative ideas and new approaches for energy production and the promotion of sustainable energy production are essential to enable a long-term and sustainable transition to renewable energy supply. In this context, especially the startup sector represents a driving force: with new innovative ideas and intention to change, approaches are generated that can seriously enable the restructuring and further development of the market for sustainable energy generation. In addition to many years of experience, the latest technical possibilities such as artificial intelligence or algorithms are also be used to implement these purposes in the best possible way.

1. Kitepower (Delft, Netherlands)

The dutch Startup Kitepower developed innovative and cost-effective alternatives to existing wind turbines by using up to 90% less material with the potential of being twice as efficient than conventional wind turbines with the same power output. The Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) Startup evolved a patented technology which does not require resource-intensive towers nor heavy foundations and therefore enables high mobility and easy deployment. By facilitating stronger and more persistent winds at higher altitudes, Kitepower systems can generate capacity factors greater than 0.5 and cost-effective electricity in return. With their main product, the Kitepower Falcon, the innovative Startup enables remote communities worldwide to mitigate dependency on polluting and expensive diesel supply.

2. Windcity Designs (Rovereto, Italy)

By developing a machine that adapts to the Nature, Windcity designs strives to increase energy production and enabling renewable energy sources to an effective alternative to the carbon energy supply system. The patent of the Italian Startup relies on the variable inertia principle and the variable inclination of the blades by combining the two principles: variable geometry for variable flows. By being the only machine that does not have a single torque curve but has a bigger amount and is carried alone on the most convenient one, in a continuous natural dialogue with Nature.

3. Octopus Energy (London, United Kingdom)

The Startup with headquarter in London (UK) developed a technology with the purpose to drive the energy revolution globally while enabling customers around the world to use green power and exceptional service. Characterized by the vision of affordable sustainable energy and a transformed customer experience, Octopus Energy was able to serve 2 million customers with cheaper greener power. By evolving their Kraken Technologies, which offers a proprietary, in-house platform based on advanced data and machine learning capabilities, Kraken automates much of the energy supply chain to allow outstanding service and efficiency which enables the Startup to manage over 25,000 customers with proprietary energy offerings.

4. Phelas (Munich, Germany)

To use solar energy and wind power even when the conditions are not optimum was the idea behind the German Startup phelas. With the development of an electricity storage system which uses a thermodynamic process to store energy in liquid air, the Startup strives towards a modular, affordable and sustainable energy supply in the future. By relying on the strengths of LAES (no harmful materials, reliable components with high TRL, flexibility in scaling power and capacity independently) and building on the principles of liquid air energy storage (LAES), phelas developed the world’s first prototype of a LAES system in modular container design. This prototype fulfills energy storage requirements while including a custom integrated internal heat management, custom cooling process and drastic simplification of the liquefaction process.

5. WePower (Vilnius, Lithuania)

The Startup WePower which was founded in Vilnius developed a blockchain-based platform which strives to enable the connection between corporate energy buyers and energy retailers directly with green energy generators. Starting with the analysis of the company’s needs and the following identification of the best fitting renewable energy project, the Startup arranges direct energy contracts. By using innovative tokenization technology, the founders aspire to create full source-transparency and flexibility by empowering all companies – regardless of their size – to purchase locally produced green energy at competitive rates.

6. Golfstrom (Munich, Germany)

Golfstrom was founded with the intention to evolve an open and engagement-driven platform for everyone who wants to actively contribute tackling the climate crisis. By developing a participation model in which everyone can actively be engaged in new solar projects, the Munich based Startup provides information about what to do as well as how the realization of new solar systems on all solar-suitable roofs are implemented in the real world. Individuals can therefore participate either as roof owners or small crowd investors funding these rooftop-projects with an amount of their choice. By involving existing energy transition players, green energy providers and local energy cooperatives, the development of new projects can be realized rapidly and at scale.

7. Wegaw (Vaud, Switzerland)

The Startup which was founded by an experienced team in Vaud, Switzerland, uses satellite imagery and Machine Learning algorithms in order to optimize the energy generation and energy trading of various energy companies. By pursuing the goal to create a more sustainable and clean energy production, Wegaw developed a product which provides accurate information on snow extent, snow depth and snow-water-equivalent based on earth observation data for hydropower providers worldwide. Through the approach of using snow water equivalent monitoring for long term water forecasting, the team will enable companies to extract more value from their renewable energy assets by generating up to 10% more energy and a MWh Price Optimization of +5% in Energy Trading.

8. Crystalsol (Vienna, Austria)

The Vienna based Startup Crystalsol was able to evolve a new type of flexible photovoltaic technology by combining the advantages of high efficiency single-crystalline materials and low-cost roll-to-roll production. With the development of a light absorbing layer made of a patented new crystalline semiconductor powder, Crystalsol facilitates various advantages in comparison to established photovoltaic technologies. By integrating the photovoltaics, which films can be opaque or transparent, they can be laminated with polymer foil for integration in structured facades or encapsulated in glass for higher stability and be tailor made in shape and size.

9. right. Based on science (Frankfurt, Germany)

The German Startup, consisting of an interdisciplinary team of nearly 30 experts, developed the X-Degree Compatibility (XDC) Model to calculate the impact a company, a portfolio or any other economic entity has on global warming (Temperature Alignment). With the provision of climate metrics and the developed software, the results are expressed as tangible °C (XDC) values striving for maximum transparency on climate-related risks and opportunities to the market and thus enable the transition to a <2°C economy. This methodology represents the only one of its kind to integrate a climate model (the FaIR Model). Whilst the XDC model is being science-based, peer-reviewed, and forward-looking and has been available for use in academic research since 2019, the model will be published as an Open Source project by the end of 2021.

10. Epishine (Linköping, Sweden)

The team behind Epishine realized the innovative idea of a unique solar cell optimized for indoor light. By manufacturing printed organic solar cells and an evaluation kit, Epishine has developed a new technology in energy harvesting. While the organic indoor light energy harvesting modules (LEHs) can be used alone or in conjunction with capacitors to replace batteries or prolong their lifetime in low-power applications, the Epishine LEHs are optimum for the powering of wireless indoor low-power applications. With the semi-transparent module area, the LEHs are for easy integration and simultaneous reducing environmental impact by up to 97% by cutting maintenance costs for batteries. Supplementary, the evaluation kit can deliver sufficient output current to power most low-power radios as well as showcase the unique product integration and design possibilities of Epishine light energy harvesting modules.
