List of 3 large battery storage developers in Australia
Battery storage has a critical role to play in the global and Australian energy transition. Renewable energy, such as solar and wind, can be highly variable due to their dependence on weather conditions. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) can mitigate this intermittency. BESS are already being deployed on a very large scale, while future demand is expected to grow rapidly. Developers of battery storage systems are key players in enabling a smooth energy transition. Here we profile three major BESS developers from Australia
1. Akaysha Energy (Melbourne, Victoria)
The Melbourne-based company is a developer, owner and operator of mega-scale battery energy storage systems. Akaysha Energy leads the industry with the most powerful BESS. The title currently belongs to the Waratah Super Battery, which has a capacity of 850MW. A further 4 GWh is under construction, with more than 10 GWh in the project pipeline. In Australia alone, the company has 11 BESS projects across the country.
2. Spark Renewables (Manly, New South Wales)
Based in Manly, New South Wales, Spark Renewables develops, owns and operates renewable energy generation assets. Its flagship projects are the Dinawan, Wattle Creek and the Mallee Energy Hub. These energy hubs are a hybrid of wind, solar and battery storage. The three Energy Hubs have a combined battery storage capacity of 900MW.
3. Eku Energy (Melbourne, Victoria)
Eku Energy is the battery storage subsidiary of the Australian financial services firm Macquarie Group. It has offices in Melbourne, Sydney, London and Tokyo. The company is solely focused on the development of BESS. In Australia alone, EKU Energy has developed 4 large battery storage systems with a capacity of around 1GW. The projects are located in New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. The Tramway Road Battery Energy Storage System is their largest project to date, with a capacity of 300MW and a performance of 1200 MWh.
The leading battery storage developers in Australia
Battery storage developers are playing a vital role in Australia’s energy transition. Without adequate storage, the volatility of renewable energy sources threatens Australia’s energy security. As a result, the deployment of BESS will play a critical role in the energy transition and BESS developers will take on a more important role. Our list is the most extensive database of Australian energy storage developers. Our database is a part of our list of the largest renewable energy developers from Australia, which also includes developers of Solar Energy, Hydrogen, Hydro and wind energy projects.
