Description
List of 3 large renewable energy investors in Australia
Australia used to rely on coal and gas for energy generation. However, in recent years, the country has undergone a significant transformation, switching to low-emission energy solutions. As of 2024, over 35% of the country’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, primarily solar and wind. Australia has one of the highest rates of solar uptake per capita worldwide, with over 3.5 million households now equipped with rooftop solar systems. Investment firms in particular are becoming increasingly aware of their responsibility and opportunity in these developments. They are therefore actively taking part in the transition to a sustainable future through emission-free energy generation. Here, we present three major Australian renewable energy developers.
1. Macquarie Asset Management
Maquire is a global asset manager from Australia with $A941 billion in assets under management globally. Since 2005, renewable energy has played an important role in the asset manager’s investment activity. Their Green Investments Team is a leader in developing companies, assets and technologies in the renewable energy sector. Macquarie Asset Management Green Wind Renewables. Macquarie Asset Management is the investor and founder of Green Wind Renewables and Aula Energy, two renewable energy developers that are building wind farms in Australia.
2. QIC
QIC is an Australian investment manager and sovereign investor with a global portfolio. As of 2024, the total value of QIC’s renewable energy assets contributing to the low-carbon transition has reached A$12 billion. Over the next five years, QIC plans to invest more than A$15 billion in the energy transition. As part of its renewable energy portfolio, QIC is investing in Australian renewable energy developers Pacific Energy and Tilt Renewables.
3. Cubico Sustainable Investments
Cubico Sustainable Investments is a global leader in providing renewable energy, which is the fastest-growing energy source, in the Americas, Europe and Australia. Although their headquarters are located in Manchester, the investor has offices in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, from where they oversee their renewable energy investments in Australia. Cubico is responsible for the 500MW Wambo I & II wind farm in Queensland. The company has a development pipeline of 5 GW across various renewable energy sectors for the future.
Overview of Renewable Energy Investor Types
The list covers three main categories of renewable energy investors: asset and investment managers, utilities, and family offices.
Asset managers invest on behalf of institutional clients, managing renewable energy portfolios that may include operating assets, selling electricity via power purchase agreements (PPAs) or on the open market, and acquiring new projects.
Utilities are increasingly acquiring and directly developing renewable energy assets to supply their customers with low-cost, carbon-neutral electricity.
Family offices, representing the investment arms of high-net-worth individuals or families, have recently begun entering the renewables sector, with a growing interest in acquiring wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers
Investors and developers in the renewable energy sector are closely interconnected. Developers are responsible for identifying, designing and constructing renewable energy projects, such as wind farms, solar parks and battery storage systems. Investors, on the other hand, provide the necessary capital to finance these projects, either during the development phase or once they are operational. In Australia in particular, investors and developers work closely together, so we also provide a list of the largest renewable energy developers in Australia.
