List of 5 large renewable energy developers in Canada

Canada is home to many leading renewable energy developers, of which we introduce five in this list:

1. Cordelio Power (Toronto, Ontario)

Cordelio Power is an Independent Power Producer from Toronto, Ontario. The company develops, owns and operates renewable energy projects. The portfolio of the renewable energy company includes wind, solar and energy storage projects all over North America. As of now (2023), Cordelio oversees a pipeline of over 14,000 MW renewable energy projects.

Update 2024: BrightNight and Cordelio Power are expanding their joint venture partnership after surpassing their initial targets. The partnership began in late 2020 with 4.5 GW of projects, planning for 50% growth. Currently, the joint venture includes a portfolio of 30 projects with over 18 GW of capacity across nine states in the US, including the Box Canyon site in Pinal County, Arizona.

2. Énergir (Montreal, Québec)

Énergir is a Canadian energy company. Although the company is primarily known as a natural gas producer, the company also has a renewable energy division. Developing wind energy and solar energy as well as hydro energy in particular is the focus of the energy giant. Énergir is active mainly in their homecountry Canada, but also develops projects in other North American countries.

3. Sky Clean Energy Ltd. (Markham, Ontario)

The renewable energy company Sky Clean Energy is headquartered in Markham, Ontario. Through developing renewable energy projects, the company aims to contribute a part of the energy transition. The 2009-founded Sky Clean Energy focuses on solar energy projects as well as energy storage projects.

4. Canadian Solar (Guelph, Ontario)

As the name suggests, Canadian Solar focuses on renewable energy from the sun. With subsidiaries in 20 countries, the publicly listed company (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is a global player with solar and energy storage projects around the world. Since the formation of Canadian Solar in 2001, the firm has developed more than 55 GW of energy in more than 150 countries. In 2017, GTM Research named the company as the Top 3 Global Utility-scale Solar PV Project Developer. Currently, Canadian Solar employs over 14,000 people globally. The company is working on international solar projects – for example, it has announced to start of operation for three solar energy projects in Japan, has signed an agreement for a solar park in Italy and sold a majority of projects in Brazil

Update 2024: Canadian Solar Inc. won the Top Brand PV Award USA 2024 from EUPD Research for excellence in renewable energy. The award reaffirms the company’s strong standing in the global PV industry, highlighting its reliability and the trust it has built among its target customers and business partners.

5. Boralex (Kingsey Falls, Québec)

The Canadian developer Boralex was founded in 1990 and is specialised in four renewable energy sectors, namely wind, solar, hydroelectricity, and thermal. Moreover, Boralex develops energy storage projects, mostly in combination with renewable energy generators. Almost every large-scale renewable energy installation in Canada is based on the work of a renewable energy developer. Developers acquire land plots, realize the installation of PV-panels or wind energy generators, connect the installation to the grid and subsequently sell it to renewable energy investors. Our list is the most extensive database of North American renewable energy developers and gives a great overview of companies with a renewable energy project pipeline.

Using the list to identify fitting partners for your project

After deciding to sell or lease a land plot to renewable energy developers – for instance in especially sunny or windy areas – it is essential to get an overview of all relevant green energy development firms who might have an interest in acquiring (or leasing) the land. Our list is tailored to get an extensive and helpful overview of potential developers and business partners.

Renewable energy research and transaction analysis

In order to compile our list, our team screens every possible renewable energy deal in Canada, analyzes the involved parties and adds them to our database. Every project developer in our list can also be found in our directory. In case we missed a relevant North American renewable energy developer, you can submit a new listing here. In case we made an error on a certain firm – for instance not mentioning the installed capacity – you can always report an error on the respective page. Through crowdsourcing, we consequently improve our list.
