List of 5 large renewable energy developers in Europe
The transition of the energy supply is of great importance when it comes to our environment’s future and, thus, our future. More and more energy developers have become aware of the seriousness of the situation and have taken on the responsibility of creating a greener energy generation and, particularly, a sustainable future. With this increased awareness, international and regional developers are orienting themselves towards developing innovative and renewable energy generation. While some specialize in one sector, such as wind parks or solar farms, others try to establish a wide range of renewable energy projects by evolving not only solar parks and wind farms (onshore and offshore) but also less popular methods like hydrogen projects, biomass, hydropower, or energy storage facilities. Five of the largest European renewable energy developers will be presented in the following.
1) EDF Renewables (Paris, France)
As an expert in wind energy generation and storage, the French developer from Paris strives to optimize the use of natural resources for energy generation. Approaching the overall goal of contributing their part to the energy transition, EDF Renewables uses the latest technologies to utilize various renewable energy sources. In collaboration with their subsidiary Theolia Naturenergien GmbH, EDF Renewables developed renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 500MW. Besides the wind parks, EDF Renewables is operating energy storage projects with a capacity of 5 GW and is currently working on its expansion to an additional 10 GW of energy storage worldwide within the next 15 years. EDF Renewables is one of the most active renewable energy independent power producers worldwide. Some of the current projects is a wind farm project in the Umsombomvu municipality or a solar farm with battery in the UK east Midlands region.
2) EDP Renováveis SA (Madrid, Spain)
EDP Renováveis is a developer from Madrid focusing on onshore and offshore wind parks and solar farms. By sharing the goal of modifying the energy supply chain to a sustainable and greener version, the Spanish developer is continuously striving for operational excellence within renewable energy projects. As the third-largest wind energy producer worldwide, EDP Renewables seeks to become a global leader in renewable energy generation while simultaneously conveying its values of innovation, sustainability, and humanization. Since its founding in 2007, the renewable energy project developer has entered 15 markets across the globe, enabling the installed capacity to be 11.361 MW. This makes EDP Renováveis one of the largest renewable energy developers in Europe.
3) Engie SA (Paris, France)
Engie is another French-based renewable energy developer committed to accelerating the transition to a carbon-neutral world. To achieve this goal, Engie develops energy projects in all areas of the renewable energy sector. Engie is involved in wind, solar, geothermal, hydrogen and biomass. In 31 countries, Engie has installed more than 46 GW of renewable energy capacity so far. Engie is also investing in the development of energy storage and has more than 5 GW of capacity in operation or under construction. In addition to its commitment to the development of energy storage facilities and energy generation, Engie is also investing in the development of the necessary infrastructure to transport and distribute renewable energy all over the world, especially in Africa and South America.
4) Ørsted A/S (Fredericia, Denmark)
The Danish renewable energy company is the world leader in offshore wind energy. Orsted is also involved in onshore wind, solar, hydrogen, biomass, and energy storage projects and has grown from its base in Denmark to operate across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Orsted works across sectors and countries to create a world powered entirely by green energy. By 2030, Orsted aims to have 35-38 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy capacity to contribute to this goal. So far, they have achieved 30.5 GW of renewable capacity. In addition to its development projects, Orsted is taking steps to eliminate its CO2 emissions and was the world’s first energy company to validate its science-based net-zero emissions target.
5) Enel Green Power (Rome, Italy)
Enel Green Power is the leader in Italy’s renewable energy sector. While approaching their mission of driving the energy supply transition forward, the Rome-based developer realised renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 49 GW. This capacity of generated energy is ascribable to different categories of renewable energy projects, such as solar farms, wind parks, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass. By continuously improving its technologies and adding more renewable energy projects to its portfolio, Enel Green Power is aiming towards a decarbonization of society and the beginning of a sustainable energy supply.
Renewables developers in Europe: our database in a nutshell
Almost every large-scale renewable energy installation in Europe is based on the work of a renewable energy developer. Developers acquire land plots, realize the installation of PV panels or wind energy generators, connect the installation to the grid, and subsequently sell it to renewable energy investors. Our list is the most extensive database of European renewable energy developers.

A few minor developers are missing in Scandinavia. However, great product, great bang for the buck. Have never seen such a product. Eliminates weeks of annoying google research. Recommended

Incredible list. Highly recommended for finding relevant players in the EU pv and wind market. Besides the big players there are also many interesting niche players.
