German renewable energy developers

List of 5 renewable energy developers in Germany

In addition to companies specializing in renewable energy from the beginning, large energy providers such as RWE are also switching to energy generation through renewable resources. Because the renunciation of the climate crisis can only be achieved with the newest technologies and innovative solutions, renewable energy developers are responsible for a sustainable foundation regarding energy generation. By being in this fundamental position regarding the energy supply chain, they should also receive the appropriate attention on this page. In the following section, we will highlight five renewable energy developers in Germany.

1. RWE AG (Essen)

After 125 years of experience in energy generation, the German developer RWE has fundamentally changed its strategy by expanding into the renewable energy sector. Today, as a leading provider of renewable energies worldwide, the Essen-based company can conduct the largest part of its core business as green electricity by generating energy through wind farms, solar power, and battery storage. Furthermore, RWE aims for climate neutrality by 2030. By now, RWE already has a Renewable capacity of around 21 GW in operation.

Update: In the US states of Texas and Arizona, RWE completed three storage units with a capacity of 190 megawatts. The new units are directly connected to solar installations. In Germany, there are already several locations. For instance, RWE operates a dual battery with 117 MW at the Lingen and Werne power plant sites. Currently, another dual battery with a total capacity of 220 megawatt-hours is under construction at the Neurath and Hamm power plant sites.

2. BayWa r.e. AG (Munich)

As a leading developer in Germany and Europe, BayWa focuses on developing solar farms and wind parks. By realizing renewable energy projects in 28 countries, the German developer can manage a total portfolio capacity of more than 6 GW and manage projects with a capacity of 10 GW. Among these projects are more than 140 wind projects, over 170 large-scale solar power plants realised worldwide, and other renewable energy projects such as hybrid, bioenergy, and energy trading. The developer relies on end-to-end solutions by the implementation of projects. BayWa is involved in several modern technologies and is always interested in supporting and implementing future-proof developments. For example, the German project developer is involved in four agrivoltaic pilot projects in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.

Update: With the fresh funds totalling €435 million, its capital requirements are now secured until the end of 2028.

3. EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg (Karlsruhe)

EnBW is an energy supplier with 5.5 million electricity and gas customers. Like many other energy suppliers, EnBW is switching from fossil-based energy sources to renewable energy sources. The company plans to invest €40 billion in the energy transition by 2030. EnBW currently owns 2.3 GW of onshore and offshore wind energy, 1.1 GW of solar energy and nearly 3 GW of hydro energy, as well as several hydrogen projects.

4. ABO Energy (Wiesbaden)

ABO Energy plans and builds wind and solar parks, as well as battery and hydrogen projects, worldwide. To date, ABO Energy has realised renewable energy plants with a combined capacity of around 6.4 gigawatts, of which it has constructed around three gigawatts. Its projects are located all over the world, primarily in Europe, particularly in Germany. Their ongoing project developments sum up to 32.2GW grid-connected wind, solar and battery projects.

5. ALTUS renewables GmbH (Karlsruhe)

The German developer with headquarters in Karlsruhe is considered a specialist in renewable energy projects. By realizing wind parks with a capacity of over 600 MW and 400 MW of photovoltaic solar farms, Altus relies on its strategic approach by first identifying eligible locations and afterwards implementing the project, including all requirements and individual circumstances. By proceeding in this way, the German developer ensures technical and commercial operational management while using the newest technologies.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers

In Germany, the renewable energy sector thrives on the strong interconnection between developers and investors. Developers play an important role in initiating, planning, and executing projects such as wind farms, solar installations, and energy storage systems. Investors, including infrastructure funds, utilities, and institutional capital providers, supply the financial resources needed to bring these projects to life. Regarding Germany’s ambitious energy transition goals a close cooperation between both parties is essential. In Germany in particular, investors and developers work closely together, so we also provide a list of the largest renewable energy investors in Germany.
