PPA stands for the abbreviation of “Power Purchase Agreement” which describes a contract between two parties. While one party, taking the role of the buyer, sells generated energy, the other party is interested in buying it. In this context, the PPA sets out all the commercial terms for the sale of power between the two parties, including when the project will begin, different commercial operation, the schedule for power delivery, penalties for non-delivery, payment terms, and termination. At present, there are many forms of PPAs, which vary according to the needs of the buyer, seller, and financing partner. There are many renewable developers offering PPAs in Europe. In the following, we will introduce 10 of the major renewable energy developers from Europe who are active in the sector and offer PPA agreements.

1. Equinor ASA (Stavanger, Norway)

First on our list of the major renewable developers in Europe offering PPAs is Euqinor ASA. The company is active in the field of renewable energy by developing wind and solar energy solutions. Currently, the Stavanger based company builds the world’s largest offshore windfarm in the UK which will provide energy to approximately five million households. With more than 21 000 employees, Equinor ASA is active in over 30 countries with the mission to turn natural resources into energy.

Update 2023: Equinor and EnBw – a German energy supply company – have formed an offshore wind alliance and will develop German offshore wind projects.

2. BayWa r.e. AG (Munich, Germany)

Second on our list is the renewable energy developer BayWa renewable energy. The leading renewable energy developer from Munich, Germany, focuses on the development of solar farms and wind parks with end-to-end solutions. While being active in 28 countries, BayWa r.e. realizing PV, hybrid, solar distribution, bioenergy and energy trading projects, as well as hybrid division solutions by combining different types of assets.

3. NaGa Solar (Maastricht, Netherlands)

Developing solar projects worldwide, NaGa Solar provides ground mounted, rooftop and special solutions in order to ensure the best possible implementation. In Addition to realizing solar energy projects by themselves, the Maastricht based company also invests in solar parks with the mission to support a green energy future.

4. Green Investment Group Ltd (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

By developing and investing in the fields of wind and solar energy, the subsidiary of Macquarie can show a pipeline of over 30GW across over 240 projects. Along with their mission to accelerate the green energy transition, the Green Investment Group develops new approaches to integrate battery storage into grids. In order to advance this mission, the UK based company works across all stages of the project lifecycle and ensure expertise in finance, investment and projects development.

5. Acciona SA (Alcobendas, Spain)

Considering themselves as experts in designing a better planet, Acciona SA develops and manages sustainable infrastructure solutions by being active in the renewable energy sector. Striving towards their goal to lead the energy transition towards a low-carbon economy, the Spanish company focuses on their innovative and technical capacity in developing wind energy and photovoltaic energy technologies.

Update 2023: Acciona has commissioned a solar energy plant in Almendralejo, Badajoz. The solar plant is the largest in Spain and will generate 257GWh of clean energy per year.

6. Ilmatar Windpower PLC (Helsinki, Finland)

Since the founding in 2011, the Finnish energy company and independent power producer focuses in the field of renewable energy by developing sustainable projects, managing constructions as well as operational assets and also retailing sales. Striving forward their mission to guarantee a sustainable future, Ilmatar Windpower PLC operates and owns one of the largest renewable energy fleets in Finland and in the Nordics.

7. Metka EGN Mytilineos (London, United Kingdom)

The leading global developer for utility-scale solar and energy storage projects with headquarter in London implements innovative solutions for complex hybrid power projects and large-scale battery storage. By being active in Australia, America, Asia, Africa and Europe, METKA EGN has extensive experience in solar projects as well as energy storage and complex hybrid projects. 8. Grenergy Renovables, S.A. (Madrid, Spain)

The 2007 founded renewable energy developer implemented solar and wind energy projects with a total capacity of over 6000 MW. By realizing the green energy projects from the beginning to the end, Grenergy ensures the required conditions and quality.

9. SSE Renewables plc (Perth, Scotland)
