List of 5 renewables O&M companies in Europe
Operations and maintenance (O&M) companies play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. Once a renewable energy plant has been successfully planned and built (see our list of European project developers), it must also be operated and maintained. Operations and maintenance companies are responsible for this. Through careful monitoring and maintaining solar, wind, hydroelectric or other renewable power plants, O&M companies ensure to maximize clean energy generation. In this list, you find five of the leading renewables O&M companies in Europe.
1) Acciona SA (Madrid, Spain)
Acciona is one of the best known European renewable energy companies. While most of their projects are in their homecountry Spain (their headquarter is in Madrid), the company is active all over the world. While the ‘energy pillar’ is one of many (Acciona is also active in real estate, transport and other areas), the company accounts itself as the global leader in the development, engineering, construction and of course operation and maintenance of renewable assets. This is reflected in the installed capacity: wind and solar energy alone hold over 10 GW of installed capacity.
Update 2024: Viscofan group has selected Acciona Energía to carry out its decarbonization project through the implementation of a photovoltaic self-consumption system at its facilities in Cáseda. This undertaking encompasses the provision of operational and maintenance services for a period of 30 years. The installation, with a capacity of 48.11 MWp, will be one of the largest industrial self-consumption plants in Spain.
2) ABO Energy GmbH & Co. KGaA (Wiesbaden, Germany)
ABO Energy is one of the best-known German renewable energy companies. Besides their activities in development and construction of solar parks, wind farms, BESS Systems as well as green hydrogen. Based in Wiesbaden, the company offers their operation and maintenance services for renewable energy projects all over Germany. ABO Energy offers both technical and commercial management services. Founded in 1996 the company has completed projects with an overall capacity of 5,9 GW.
Update 2024: In the most recent wind tender organized by the Federal Network Agency, ABO Energy has successfully obtained tariffs for all three submitted wind farms. The successful projects are Ortenberg in Hesse (three turbines with 19.8 megawatts), Heimbach-Vlatten in North Rhine-Westphalia (two turbines with 12 megawatts), and Schierenberg in Brandenburg (eight turbines with 48 megawatts). It is becoming increasingly evident that 2024 will represent the companies most successful year to date in the development of wind power in Germany.
3) Lightsource BP (London, UK)
Lightsource is one of the most well-known renewable energy companies worldwide. As the name suggests, the company mainly focuses on solar energy projects. The company was is globally active and has developed over 300 projects worldwide. Lightsource not only manages and operates their own projects, but also offers operations and maintenance services for assets from third parties. Since its founding in 2010 the company has developed 9.5 GW of solar power. In 2017, Lightsource and bp entered into a joint venture, with each entity holding a 50% stake. In a recent announcement, BP revealed its intention to proceed with the full acquisition of Lightsource BP.
Update 2024: Lightsource bp has facilitated accelerated growth in Germany through the signing of a 500 MWp Development Agreement with Kajoni Energie GmbH, a German-based developer of renewable energy projects.
4) Martifer Group (Oliveira de Frades, Portugal)
The Martifer Group is a large-scale company from Portugal, with a focus on metal construction and renewable energies. In their renewable energy section, the company focuses on solar and wind energy projects. Mainly wind farm projects are developed and operated by the group with headquarters in Oliveira de Frades. The Martifer Group was founded in 1990 and is active all over the globe.
Update 2024: Martifier and Ocean Winds have recently announced a partnership for a floating offshore wind tender (WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind farm) in Portugal.
5) Fred. Olsen Windcarrier, AS (Sentrum, Norway)
Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is based in Sentrum, Norway and also a company of good name. As the company name already states, their asset focus lies on wind energy, specifically on offshore plants. The roots of the Nordic company go back to 1848, while the renewable focus was established in 1996. Nowadays Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is a construction company also offering operation and management of (offshore) wind parks. The company is globally active and has a track record of over 1.000 installations. It can be considered as on of the top renewables O&M companies in Europe. Fred. Olsen Windcarrier has installed over 5.500 MW of clean green energy.
