European operations and maintenance for renewable energy

List of 5 renewable energy operations and maintenance companies in Europe

Operations and maintenance (O&M) companies play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. Once a renewable energy plant has been successfully planned and built (see our list of European project developers), it must also be operated and maintained. Operations and maintenance companies are responsible for this. Through careful monitoring and maintaining solar, wind, hydroelectric or other renewable power plants, O&M companies ensure to maximize clean energy generation. In this list, you find five of the leading renewables operations & maintenance specialists in Europe.

1) Acciona, SA (Madrid, Spain)

Acciona is one of the best known European renewable energy companies. While most of their projects are in their homecountry Spain (their headquarter is in Madrid), the company is active all over the world. While the ‘energy pillar’ is one of many (Acciona is also active in real estate, transport and other areas), the company accounts itself as the global leader in the development, engineering, construction and of course operation and maintenance of renewable assets. This is reflected in the installed capacity: wind and solar energy alone hold over 10 GW of installed capacity.

Update 2023: Together with Plug Power, Acciona has started a green hydrogen project in Rocaforte, Spain. The project will be power by wind and energy projects, which are also developed and managed by Acciona.

2) Enerparc AG (Hamburg, Germany)

The Hamburg-based Enerparc AG is one of the top renewables operations and maintenance companies in Europe and in Germany. Since their foundation in 2008, the company has been and is active worldwide. Over 4 GW of solar projects have been realised by Enerparc – the company is not only active in operations & maintenance, but is also involved in the planning, development, investment and more steps in the value chain.

3) Lightsource BP (London, UK)

Lightsource is one of the most well-known renewable energy companies worldwide. As the name suggests, the company mainly focuses on solar energy projects. The company was is globally active and has developed over 300 projects worldwide. Lightsource not only manages and operates their own projects, but also offers operations and maintenance services for assets from third parties.

4) Martifer Group

The Martifer Group is a large-scale company from Portugal, with a focus on metal construction and renewable energies. In their renewable energy section, the company focuses on solar and wind energy projects. Mainly wind farm projects are developed and operated by the group with headquarters in Oliveira de Frades. The Martifer Group was founded in 1990 and is active all over the globe.

5) Fred. Olsen Windcarrier, AS (Sentrum, Norway)

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is based in Sentrum, Norway and also a company of good name. As the company name already states, their asset focus lies on wind energy, specifically on offshore plants. The roots of the Nordic company go back to 1848, while the renewable focus was established in 1996. Nowadays Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is a construction company also offering operation and management of (offshore) wind parks. The company is globally active and has a track record of over 700 installations.
