Solar developers in Europe

List of 10 large solar park developers in Europe

Solar energy is one of the best-known renewable energies – furthermore, solar energy is a classic sustainable investment alongside wind energy and offers a promising path to sustainable energy, especially in the wake of climate change. It is in the nature of solar energy to be used mainly in sunny countries – accordingly, European solar development is largely found in the warmer countries of Europe, such as Spain, Portugal, France, or Italy. But also in the neighboring countries, like Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, etc., there are a lot of solar energy developers who want to have their share in the growing market. In the following article, we present 10 of the most relevant European solar developers.

1. EDP Renováveis SA (Madrid, Spain)

EDP Renováveis was founded in 2007 and is one of the best-known renewable energy developers. Being active in Europe, North America, and Brazil the Spanish solar developer has installed over 12,2 GW globally. The company has planned, developed, and installed over 15 solar parks worldwide, which accounts for roughly 25% of its total renewable energy portfolio. EDP Renováveis is also very active in the wind energy sector and is the world’s third-largest wind energy producer.

2. BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH (Munich, Germany)

BayWa r.e.‘s history goes as far as 1923 when the first company was founded. In 1976, the German-based solar developer presented the so-called “Sonnenhaus”, a precursor of today’s solar energy. Today, BayWa r.e is the largest renewable energy developer in Germany as well as in Europe. The Munich-based solar developer is globally active and has projects in 28 countries all over the world. Solar energy is a huge asset for the company as BayWa r.e. has realized over 625 solar projects with more than 1.6 GW.

3. EDF Renewables (Paris, France)

EDF Renewables is a French renewable energy developer focused on wind and solar energy as well as energy storage. The Paris-based solar developer has a lot of experience in the solar segment and is present mostly in Europe and North America. In mid-2020, EDF has achieved a portfolio of over 3.000 installed MW of solar energy which makes their solar segment the second biggest asset of the company, just behind wind energy.

4. Enel Green Power (Rome, Italy)

Enel Green Power was founded in 2008 and has been able to expand to a total of 28 countries on 5 continents since. The Italian renewable energy developer focuses not only on the development of solar parks but is also active in the wind, biomass, geothermal, and also hydro/hydroelectric sectors. Overall Enel has installed a total of 4700 MW – the solar portfolio of the Rome-based developer accounts for over 1000 MW installed capacity in Europe alone.

5. Voltalia (Paris, France)

Voltalia is another French renewable energy developer – with a presence in 20 countries, the developer has achieved over 1GW of installed capacity, with over 9GW in the pipeline. The Paris-based developer was founded in 2005 and has been active in various fields of renewable energy since – starting from solar/photovoltaic energy over wind parks to hydro energy and energy storage. Functioning as an independent power producer as well as a service provider, Voltalia is involved in every aspect of the value chain.

6. Iberdrola (Bilbao, Spain)

Iberdrola is a well-known Spanish renewable energy developer – mostly active in the wind sector. But the leading renewable energy developer is also very active in the solar market and plays a huge role in the development of solar and photovoltaic plants. Especially in Spain, the Bilbao-based developer has been very active in the last years and developed multiple solar farms in its home country. Overall, the portfolio of Iberdrola holds 52.000 MW of installed capacity.

7. Scatec (Oslo, Norway)

Scatec is an Oslo-based renewable energy developer that works globally – the main assets of Scatec are hydro plants and solar power. Founded in 2007, the Nordic solar developer has reached a portfolio of 3035 MW installed capacity. In Europe, Scatec is mostly active in the Czech Republic and Ukraine and works closely with local authorities. Solar development is the most important and biggest energy source for the Nordic developer.

8. Naga Solar (Maastricht, Netherlands)

Naga Solar is – as the name suggests – a solar developer based in the Dutch Maastricht. Naga solar develops mostly large-scale solar projects and is open for every kind of solar park – whether ground-mounted, rooftop, floating, or in parking spaces. Being active in 9 countries, mostly in Europe, the solar developer from the Netherlands has around 3.1 GW capacity in the pipeline and over 110 MW installed projects.

9. Be Green (Haslev, Denmark)

Another important and interesting Dutch player in the solar development market is BeGreen – the Haslev-based developer is focused on solar energy. Be Green is the first and only independent power producer in Denmark and has managed to develop and sell over 300 MW of solar projects. Moreover, Be Green has expertise in Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and is open for requests.

10. Lightsource BP (London, England)

Lightsource BP is a global leader in the renewable energy sector – specializing in solar energy, the London-based developer is well-known worldwide for their expertise in the solar field. The considered solar pioneer is active in 14 different countries and has a portfolio of 3 GW installed capacity – with another 20 GW in the project pipeline. Lightsource is mainly involved in the development and construction of solar or photovoltaic parks but is also involved in the management/operation as well as the sale.

Update 2024: Commencing in 2026, Lightsource BP entered a 149MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with LyondellBasell, a chemical manufacturer. This agreement entails Lightsource supplying approximately 284,000 megawatt-hours of solar power from one of its projects in Spain to LyondellBasell. This move is part of Lightsource bp’s growing presence in Spain.
