List of 5 large solar park developers in Europe

Solar energy is a cornerstone of the renewable energy revolution, offering a sustainable path to combating climate change and meeting energy demands. Across Europe, key players are driving innovation and large-scale solar park development. Here are five of the most prominent solar developers shaping the future of clean energy. We present 5 of the most relevant European solar developers in the following.

1. EDP Renováveis SA (Madrid, Spain)

EDP Renováveis was founded in 2007 and is among the best-known renewable energy developers. Being active in Europe, North America, and Brazil, the Spanish solar developer has installed over 12,2 GW globally. The company has planned, developed, and installed over 15 solar parks worldwide, which accounts for roughly 25% of its total renewable energy portfolio. EDP Renováveis is also very active in the wind energy sector and is the world’s third-largest producer.

2. BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH (Munich, Germany)

BayWa r.e.‘s history goes back to 1923, when the first company was founded. In 1976, the German-based solar developer presented the so-called “Sonnenhaus”, a precursor of today’s solar energy. Today, BayWa r.e is the largest renewable energy developer in Germany and Europe. The Munich-based solar developer is globally active and has projects in 28 countries worldwide. Solar energy is a huge asset for the company as BayWa r.e. has realized over 625 solar projects with more than 1.6 GW.

3. Enel Green Power (Rome, Italy)

Enel Green Power was founded in 2008 and has been able to expand to a total of 28 countries on 5 continents since. The Italian renewable energy developer focuses not only on the development of solar parks but is also active in the wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydro/hydroelectric sectors. Overall, Enel has installed a total of 4700 MW – the solar portfolio of the Rome-based developer accounts for over 1000 MW of installed capacity in Europe alone.

4. Iberdrola (Bilbao, Spain)

Iberdrola is a well-known Spanish renewable energy developer that is primarily active in the wind sector. But the leading renewable energy developer is also very active in the solar market and plays a huge role in developing solar and photovoltaic plants. Especially in Spain, the Bilbao-based developer has been very active in the last years and developed multiple solar farms in its home country. Overall, the portfolio of Iberdrola holds 52.000 MW of installed capacity.

5. Lightsource BP (London, England)

Lightsource BP is a global leader in the renewable energy sector specializing in solar energy. The London-based developer is well-known worldwide for its expertise in the solar field. The solar pioneer is considered active in 14 different countries and has a 3 GW installed capacity portfolio – with another 20 GW in the project pipeline. Lightsource is mainly involved in developing and constructing solar or photovoltaic parks but is also involved in the management/operation and the sale.

Update 2024: Commencing in 2026, Lightsource BP entered a 149MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with LyondellBasell, a chemical manufacturer. This agreement entails Lightsource supplying approximately 284,000 megawatt-hours of solar power from one of its projects in Spain to LyondellBasell. This move is part of Lightsource bp’s growing presence in Spain.
