List of the largest wind turbine manufacturers

List of the 10 largest wind turbine manufacturers

In the wind turbine market there are many different manufacturers. There are a few huge companies that are often responsible for the development of large scale on- and offshore wind parks and many smaller developers that produce small- and medium sized wind turbines. In the following, our research team compiled a list of the 10 largest wind turbine manufacturers.

1) Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark)

Vestas is the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world. To date, the company has installed over 145 GW of wind turbines in 85 countries. The company has onshore wind turbines and offshore turbines in their lineup. Their largest onshore turbine has a rated power of 6.8 MW and their largest offshore turbine has a rated power of 15 MW. The company is successfully led by Henrik Andersen.

Update 2024: Vestas aims to lead in offshore wind and contribute to Europe’s offshore wind park expansion. In January 2024, the company announced the establishment of a new blade factory in Szczecin, Poland, focusing on producing blades for the V236-15.0 MW, Vestas’ flagship offshore wind turbine. This facility is anticipated to commence operations in 2026, generating over 1,000 direct jobs.

2) Siemens Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain)

Siemens Gamesa is a subsidiary of Siemens Energy which was created as a result of the fusion of Gamesa Corpoación Tecnológica with Siemens. The company offers onshore and offshore wind turbines. In addition to this the company offers operating and maintenance services. So far, it has installed 109,6 GW of wind turbines. Of those, 94,6 GW were onshore wind turbines and 15 GW were offshore wind turbines.

3) Beijing Goldwind Science & Creation Windpower Equipment Co., Ltd. (Beijing, China)

Goldwind is a leading green energy company from Beijing. The company actively promotes energy conservation and environmental protection. Currently, it is in the diversification phase of their business plan. The company develops onshore wind turbines but is the act of diving into the offshore and overseas markets. Goldwinds largest onshore wind turbine, the GW 6S/8S has a rated power of 8 MW. The president of the company is Cao Zhigang.

4) Nordex SE (Hamburg, Germany)

Nordex was founded in 1985 and is the largest German wind turbine manufacturer. The company developed the first 4MW onshore wind turbine in 2017 and has since gone on to produce up to 6 MW turbines. Nordex offers various services from clean sell to project development and the development of wind parks. The company CEO is José Luis Blanco.

5) General Electric Renewable Energy (Boulogne-Billancourt, France)

General Electric Renewable Energy is the green energy branch of General Electric. The company has installed over 49.000 wind turbines worldwide. Next to wind the company is also in the hydro, solar, and hydrogen markets. The company produces onshore and offshore wind turbines. GE currently has the largest offshore wind turbine in the world, the Halilade-X. This wind turbine has a 220-meter rotor, 107-meter blades and has a rated power of 14 MW.

6) Envision Energy (Shanghai, China)

Envision is the wind turbine branch of the leading renewable energy company Envision Group. The firm design, manufactures and operates smart wind turbines. Envision also produces EV batteries and owns a Formula E team. The firm onshore and offshore wind turbines and has so far installed over 40 GW.

Update 2024: Envision has solidified its footprint in the MENA region with significant wind projects. This includes providing 1.67 GW of wind turbines to Neom and supplying 500 MW to AMEA Power in Egypt.

7) Zhejiang Yunda Wind Power Co., Ltd. (Hangzhou, China)

Windey is the oldest manufacturer of large-scale wind turbines in China. The company has installed over 10.000 wind turbines globally and has a cumulative installed capacity of 15.4 GW. Windey produces multiple onshore wind turbines, the largest of which has a rated power of 6.6 MW.

Wind power

Wind is an unlimited source of energy and thus, an important part of the future of energy generation. Wind power is captured by using either horizontal axis wind turbines (like you can see in the picture above) or with vertical axis wind turbines. Due to the Betz’s law, wind turbines are able to capture 60% of the wind energy.

Types of wind turbines produced by the largest wind turbine makers

In the following, we give an overview of the most important technologies and differentiations in our list of the largest wind turbine makers.

Horizontal axis turbines

Horizontal axis wind turbines have a horizontally mounted axis on top of a tower on which a generator and a rotor with blades is installed. The most common design is a three-bladed rotor. But there are also wind turbines designs with four, two or in rare cases even only one blade. The blades must be turned in the wind.

Vertical axis turbines

VAWT’s or vertical axis wind turbines have a vertical mounted rotor shaft. These wind turbines often come in the form of Darrieus wind turbines or Savonius wind turbines. Vertical wind turbines do not need to be turned into the wind which is an advantage compared to horizontal wind turbines. On the downside, they produce much less energy averaged over time.

Offshore wind turbines are much more powerful than onshore wind turbines. However, this comes with a large cost increase: The installation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines is rather difficult. To date, onshore wind turbines comprise the majority of wind turbines worldwide. Due to the fact that offshore wind parks become more commercially viable, the development of offshore wind parks is increasing. Meanwhile, there is also an increasing rejection of onshore wind turbines due to their sound and disturbance of the scenery.
