List of the 10 largest wind turbine manufacturers
In the wind turbine market there are many different manufacturers. There are a few huge companies that are often responsible for the development of large scale on- and offshore wind parks and many smaller developers that produce small- and medium sized wind turbines. In the following, our research team compiled a list of the 10 largest wind turbine manufacturers.
1) Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark)
Vestas is the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world. To date, the company has installed over 145 GW of wind turbines in 85 countries. The company has onshore wind turbines and offshore turbines in their lineup. Their largest onshore turbine has a rated power of 6.8 MW and their largest offshore turbine has a rated power of 15 MW. The company is successfully led by Henrik Andersen.
Update 2024: Vestas aims to lead in offshore wind and contribute to Europe’s offshore wind park expansion. In January 2024, the company announced the establishment of a new blade factory in Szczecin, Poland, focusing on producing blades for the V236-15.0 MW, Vestas’ flagship offshore wind turbine. This facility is anticipated to commence operations in 2026, generating over 1,000 direct jobs.
2) Siemens Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain)
Siemens Gamesa is a subsidiary of Siemens Energy which was created as a result of the fusion of Gamesa Corpoación Tecnológica with Siemens. The company offers onshore and offshore wind turbines. In addition to this the company offers operating and maintenance services. So far, it has installed 109,6 GW of wind turbines. Of those, 94,6 GW were onshore wind turbines and 15 GW were offshore wind turbines.
3) Beijing Goldwind Science & Creation Windpower Equipment Co., Ltd. (Beijing, China)
Goldwind is a leading green energy company from Beijing. The company actively promotes energy conservation and environmental protection. Currently, it is in the diversification phase of their business plan. The company develops onshore wind turbines but is the act of diving into the offshore and overseas markets. Goldwinds largest onshore wind turbine, the GW 6S/8S has a rated power of 8 MW. The president of the company is Cao Zhigang.
4) Nordex SE (Hamburg, Germany)
Nordex was founded in 1985 and is the largest German wind turbine manufacturer. The company developed the first 4MW onshore wind turbine in 2017 and has since gone on to produce up to 6 MW turbines. Nordex offers various services from clean sell to project development and the development of wind parks. The company CEO is José Luis Blanco.
5) General Electric Renewable Energy (Boulogne-Billancourt, France)
General Electric Renewable Energy is the green energy branch of General Electric. The company has installed over 49.000 wind turbines worldwide. Next to wind the company is also in the hydro, solar, and hydrogen markets. The company produces onshore and offshore wind turbines. GE currently has the largest offshore wind turbine in the world, the Halilade-X. This wind turbine has a 220-meter rotor, 107-meter blades and has a rated power of 14 MW.
6) Envision Energy (Shanghai, China)
Envision is the wind turbine branch of the leading renewable energy company Envision Group. The firm design, manufactures and operates smart wind turbines. Envision also produces EV batteries and owns a Formula E team. The firm onshore and offshore wind turbines and has so far installed over 40 GW.
Update 2024: Envision has solidified its footprint in the MENA region with significant wind projects. This includes providing 1.67 GW of wind turbines to Neom and supplying 500 MW to AMEA Power in Egypt.
7) Zhejiang Yunda Wind Power Co., Ltd. (Hangzhou, China)
Windey is the oldest manufacturer of large-scale wind turbines in China. The company has installed over 10.000 wind turbines globally and has a cumulative installed capacity of 15.4 GW. Windey produces multiple onshore wind turbines, the largest of which has a rated power of 6.6 MW.
8) VENSYS Energy AG (Neunkirchen, Germany)
Vensys is a wind turbine manufacturer from Neunkirchen in Germany. The company produces gearless wind turbines. So far, the company has installed over 64 GW of wind turbines worldwide, with rated power of the company’s top turbine at 6.2 MW.
9) Mingyang Smart Energy Group Co., Ltd. (Zhongshan City, China)
Mingyang is a global energy solutions provider. The company is active in wind, solar, storage, hydrogen and new energy development markets. Mingyang produces onshore and offshore wind turbines and offers complete wind farms solutions.
10) HZ Windpower N.A.Inc. (Troy, USA)
HZ Windpower is an enterprise of China Shipbuilding Industry Coproation (CSIC). The company develops 2 MW wind turbines with high energy yields.
