Top Five Investors, January to September 2026
Combined January to September 2026 capacity: 11.5 GW across 5 transactions. These five investors represent the largest US acquirers in the Renewables.Digital database for January through September 2026, but they are part of a much broader market. The database tracks 46 US renewable energy transactions in the same period. Part of Pattern Energy’s figure relates to projects in Canada.

Investor Profiles
What they do: I Squared Capital is an independent global infrastructure investment manager founded in 2012 and headquartered in Miami, with more than $50 billion in assets under management. It invests across energy, utilities, transport, digital and environmental infrastructure, and runs a dedicated energy transition strategy.
January to September 2026 activity: Acquisition of Oriden from Mitsubishi Power Americas (April). Oriden, founded in 2019 and based in Pittsburgh, holds a pipeline of more than 5 GW of solar and battery storage projects from greenfield origination to shovel ready status, concentrated in the MISO and PJM markets.
I Squared plans to invest around $300 million to turn Oriden from a development led business into an independent power producer. The deal follows the firm’s usual approach of acquiring a platform and scaling it.
What they do: Cypress Creek is a US independent power producer and developer of solar and energy storage projects, founded in 2014 and owned by EQT Infrastructure since 2021. The company develops, owns and operates utility scale assets and has commercialised around 19 GW of projects across the country.
January to September 2026 activity: Acquisition of the Steel River project in Mississippi County, Arkansas, from Swift Current Energy (March). The project combines 2.45 GW of solar with 720 MW / 2.9 GWh of battery storage, built in three phases of roughly 815 MW solar and 240 MW / 960 MWh storage each, with all phases expected in service by 2029.
With estimated capital costs above $4.5 billion, Steel River doubles Cypress Creek’s operating and under construction portfolio to nearly 7 GW.
What they do: Pattern Energy is a San Francisco based developer and operator of wind, solar, transmission and storage projects, majority owned by CPP Investments. Its operating and under construction portfolio is close to 10 GW across North America.
January to September 2026 activity: Agreement to acquire Cordelio Power (January), an independent power producer active in the United States and Canada. The portfolio comprises 16 wind, solar and storage projects that are operating or under construction, plus most of Cordelio’s US wind and storage development pipeline and its development and operations team.
The transaction is share based. Since Cordelio was wholly owned by CPP Investments, the deal consolidates two portfolios under the same owner and increases CPP Investments’ stake in Pattern Energy.
What they do: Lydian Energy is a Washington DC based independent power producer that develops, builds and operates utility scale solar and storage projects. It was launched in 2024 by Excelsior Energy Capital, an independent North American clean energy investor based in Minnesota.
January to September 2026 activity: Acquisition of Hanwha Renewables’ Atlas North portfolio in California (April): four late stage projects with more than 1,000 MW of solar and 450 MW / 1,800 MWh of battery storage, connected to the CAISO grid through dedicated transmission infrastructure.
Permitting, interconnection and offtake milestones have been reached, and most output is contracted with California load serving entities. It is Lydian’s largest investment to date and brings its portfolio to 18 projects and 4.4 GW.
What they do: Headwater Energy is a US solar and storage developer and operator formed in 2023 through the merger of Oakhurst Energy and Aspen Creek Power. The company has more than 3.5 GW of active solar development and a portfolio of operating projects.
January to September 2026 activity: Acquisition of Arena Renewables (April), a distributed generation developer founded in July 2023 with a pipeline of nearly 1 GW of community and distributed solar and storage projects.
Arena’s leadership continues to run the business, while Headwater provides investment capital, construction financing and tax equity to move projects to placed in service faster.
Key Market Patterns
Storage Integration as a Standard
All five transactions include battery storage, either paired with solar or as part of a wider portfolio. Steel River and Atlas North alone add 1,170 MW / 4.7 GWh of storage. Among the largest buyers, storage is now a core component of acquired portfolios rather than an optional addition.
Corporate Acquisitions as the Route to Scale
Three of the five deals are company acquisitions. I Squared Capital acquired Oriden, Pattern Energy acquired Cordelio Power and Headwater acquired Arena Renewables, each time taking on a team and a pipeline along with the assets. The other two, Steel River and Atlas North, are large projects or portfolios at an advanced stage of development.
Capital Recycling by Developers
Swift Current Energy and Hanwha Renewables sold projects after reaching key development milestones, a common model for developers funding their next pipeline. Mitsubishi Power Americas exited project development altogether.
Deployment Trajectory and Market Outlook
US capacity additions are accelerating. According to the US Energy Information Administration, developers planned to add 86 GW of utility scale generating capacity in 2026, compared with 53 GW in 2025, with solar accounting for 43.4 GW and battery storage for 24 GW. Within this broader market, the five largest acquirers in the Renewables.Digital database took on 11.5 GW between January and September 2026, while the database tracks 46 US transactions in total over the same period. The top five deals show investors securing growth through pipelines and platforms, with storage built into every portfolio.
