As the 15th windiest state in the United States, the wind resource is able to provide at least half of the needs of New York‘s electricity. New York as a renewables-supportive state is a leader in the transition to a greener energy future.

The first wind farms in New York came online in 2000 with a capacity of a bit over 18MW and in 2020. Now, the state already had a wind power capacity of almost 2,000MW.

1) Greenbacker Capital (New York, US)

Greenbacker Capital is a leading company in green energy investment. It is an independent power producer as well as an investment manager. In May 2022, the company purchased a 55.4 MW wind project named Howard in New York from the BlackRock Global Renewable Power Fund II. The wind farm has been operational since 2011 and generates enough wind energy to power 12,500 homes a year in New York.

2) AES (Virginia, US)

The AES Corporation is an American Fortune 500 company. As an Independent Power Producer, it generates and distributes electrical power. It develops renewable energy supply from solar, wind and energy storage.

In 2021, AES Corporation purchased six wind farms totalling 612MW in New York state from Valcour Wind Energy. Three wind farms totalling 279MW are in Clinton County, two with a combined capacity of 227MW are in Wyoming County and one 106MW project is in Franklin County. This portfolio currently produces about 25% of New York’s wind power.

3) Apollo Global Management (New York, USA)

Apollo Global Management is one of the largest asset management firms. It invests in a wide range of renewables from solar and storage to wind projects. The company has announced an agreement for the exclusive right to invest in the Arthur Kill offshore wind Terminal project. Arthur Kill is the first offshore wind pre-assembly port facility in the state of New York. Moreover, it is the only offshore wind port site in

New York with direct access to the ocean which makes it New York’s only option to compete with offshore wind turbine staging ports of other states.
