In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Denmark’s top three largest wind farms. These impressive projects highlight Denmark’s dedication to green energy and showcase how wind power is shaping the country’s sustainable future.
1) 800-1000MW Thor Wind project
Situated in the North Sea, the Thor Offshore Wind Farm is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in the country. It will be positioned at least 22 kilometers from the Thorsminde coastline on the west side of Jutland. The farm was put up for bidding, allowing for a power range of 800 to 1000 MW. With this capacity, the Thor Wind Farm will be able to provide electricity for approximately 1 million Danish households. In 2023, developer RWE Renewables Denmark A/S initiated the construction of the onshore substation for the offshore wind project. This groundbreaking event marks the start of one of Denmark’s most significant contributions to the transition towards renewable energy. The plan is for Thor to be fully operational and connected to the grid by the end of 2027 at the latest. The project is authorized for a 30-year period, with an optional extension of five years.

2) 604MW Kriegers Flak wind farm
Kriegers Flak, with its 72 offshore wind turbines, holds the title of being Denmark’s largest operational offshore wind farm. The offshore wind farm raises Danish wind power production by 16 percent. Its power generation capacity is equivalent to what about 600,000 Danish households consume in a year. This massive wind farm covers a space of 132 square kilometers. Situated in the Baltic Sea, it is positioned 15 to 40 kilometers off Denmark’s coast, and it’s the newest and largest offshore wind farm operated by Vattenfall. This inauguration underlines Vattenfall’s leading role as the primary offshore wind power provider in Denmark, contributing to over half of the total installed capacity.

3) 407MW offshore park Horns Rev 3
Horns Rev 3 was going to be the biggest offshore wind farm in Denmark and will boost Denmark‘s wind production by about 12%. It was developed by Swedish utility provider Vattenfall. The wind farm has the power to generate 407 MW. With this amount of power, it can provide electricity for around 425,000 Danish homes in a year. The wind farm is situated in the North Sea, around 25 to 40 kilometers away from the Danish West Coast. Apart from Horns Rev 3 and Kriegers Flak, Vattenfall is also building the 170MW Vesterhav Syd and the 180MW Vesterhav Nord offshore wind farm.
