List of 5 renewable energy investors in Canada

Canada has a longstanding history of fossil-fuel-based energy production. However, the country remains committed to the Paris Agreement and has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By the end of 2024, Canada had already installed 24 GW of wind, solar, and energy storage capacity nationwide.

In the past year alone, investment in clean energy technologies and infrastructure in Canada reached $35 billion, positioning the country as the 8th largest global investor in clean power and electrification. Canadian renewable energy investors play an important role in the future of this transformation. Here, we present five of the largest renewable energy investors from Canada.

1) Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (Toronto, Ontario)

Toronto-based Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. was established in 2011 and focuses on renewable energy and decarbonization solutions. The investor describes itself as a “global leader in decarbonisation” and has invested in onshore wind, solar, hydro and other sustainable energy solutions. Brookfield operates in more than 20 countries with a focus on North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Across all its markets, Brookfield has more than $100 billion of assets under management. Its assets include up to 8GW of hydro, 11GW of wind and more than GW of solar in operation.

2) Cordelio Power Inc. (Toronto, Ontario)

Cordelio Power Inc is also based in Toronto and operates in both its home country of Canada and the United States. Since its inception in 2018, the renewable energy investor has built 1,400MW of operational projects in addition to 18GW of projects in development. Cordelio’s main focus is on solar, wind and storage projects in North America.

Update: Cordelio Power wants to expand its joint venture with renewable energy developer BrightNight. Their joint portfolio comprises 30 projects, totaling over 18 GW of capacity, spread across nine U.S. states. Notable among them is the Box Canyon site in Pinal County, Arizona. Launched in late 2020, the partnership began with 4.5 GW of projects incorporating energy storage, with an initial goal of achieving 50% growth.

3) Grasshopper Energy Corporation (Mississauga, Ontario)

Grasshopper Energy was founded in 2007 and currently has $1.8 billion in assets. It has another $6.5 billion worth of projects in the pipeline. The renewable energy investor is active in the solar business. Its core solar markets are in Canada, the US and Japan. It is currently expanding into Brazil, Italy, Vietnam and Australia.

4) Kruger Energy Inc. (Montreal, Québec)

Kruger Energy Inc. is a renewable energy company based in Montréal. Founded in 2004, the company focuses on the development and management of renewable energy projects. Nearly 10 years after its inception, Kruger manages and operates 47 assets. These include hydroelectric, wind, energy storage, solar and biomass cogeneration plants. The total installed capacity of the projects is 650 MW.

5) Pathfinder Clean Energy – PACE (Calgary)

Pathfinder Clean Energy – or in short – PACE Canada is developing and managing clean energy projects from start to finish. As a partnership between Pathfinder Clean Energy and Goldbeck Solar, PACE has established and experienced founders. The company focuses on Canadian renewable energy projects: as of how, PACE has 4 utility solar projects totalling 80MW of installed capacity.

Different types of green energy investors covered

Our list mainly includes three types of renewable energy investors: asset- and investment-managers, utilities, and family offices. Asset managers are investing in the name of institutional investors and managing a renewables portfolio for their funds. That includes operating the portfolio, selling the energy through PPAs and on the free market, and acquiring new assets. Utilities are acquiring – and in some cases building on their own – renewable assets to ensure a CO2-neutral and cheap energy supply for their customers. Family offices – the investment firms of high-net-worth families – recently started investing in renewables and acquiring wind and solar parks.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers

In Canada, renewable energy developers and investors work together closely to help the country achieve its clean energy goals. The developers’ role involves identifying viable sites, obtaining regulatory approvals and constructing projects. Investors, such as pension funds, utilities or family offices, provide the necessary financial backing. This partnership is essential for Canada’s energy transformation. With this in mind, the renewables.digital research team compiled a list of the largest renewable energy developers in Canada.
