Canadian wind energy developers

List of 5 large renewable energy developers in Canada

Canada is another country with a long history of fossil-fuelled energy production. Despite this, it has committed to the Paris Agreement and has set itself the target of becoming net-zero by 2050. By the end of 2024, Canada already had 24 GW of wind, solar and energy storage capacity installed across the country. Investment in the deployment of clean energy technologies and infrastructure in Canada reached $35 billion last year. With this level of investment, Canada ranks 8th in the world for investment in clean power and electrification. This makes Canada an important market for renewable energy investors and developers. Canada itself is home to many leading renewable energy developers, five of which are featured in this list:

1. Brookfield Renewable Partners (Toronto, Ontario)

Brookfield Renewable Partners (BRP) is a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management, a global alternative asset manager with over $1 trillion in AUM. Founded in 2011 through the merger of Brookfield’s hydro and wind assets, BRP adopted its current name in 2016. Backed by one of the world’s largest asset managers, BRP not only develops but also invests in, owns, and operates renewable energy assets. As of 2024, BRP has developed 46 GW of renewable energy capacity, including: 8.3 GW hydro, 16.9 GW wind, 11.7 GW utility-scale solar, 6.4 GW distributed energy and storage. Its development pipeline exceeds 200 GW, with 74 GW in advanced stages

2. Canadian Solar (Guelph, Ontario)

As its name suggests, Canadian Solar focuses on renewable energy from the sun. With offices in 20 countries, the publicly traded company (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is a global player with solar and energy storage projects around the world. Since its founding in 2001, Canadian Solar has developed over 55 GW of energy in more than 150 countries. Most of their projects are carried out by their subsidiary company Recurrent Energy. In 2017, GTM Research ranked the company among the top three global utility-scale solar project developers. Canadian Solar currently employs more than 14,000 people worldwide. The company is working on international solar projects – for example, it has announced the commissioning of three solar power projects in Japan, signed an agreement for a solar park in Italy and sold a majority of projects in Brazil.

3. AMP.ENERGY (Toronto, Ontario)

Amp is a leading global power developer specialising in renewable energy. Its portfolio consists of solar, wind and battery storage assets. In total, Amp Energy has built or contracted more than 14 GW of assets. Amp’s projects are not limited to Canada but extend far beyond. It has operations in North America, Australia, Japan, Spain and the UK. In North America alone, Amp Energy has completed more than 700 projects with over 700MW built or under contract.

4. Cordelio Power (Toronto, Ontario)

Cordelio Power is an independent power producer based in Toronto, Ontario. The company develops, owns and operates renewable energy projects. The renewable energy company’s portfolio includes wind, solar and energy storage projects across North America and has reached over 1,400 MW. An additional 22,000 MW is planned or under development.

Update: BrightNight and Cordelio Power are expanding their joint venture partnership after exceeding their initial goals. The partnership started with 4.5 GW of projects at the end of 2020, with plans for 50% growth. The joint venture currently has a portfolio of 30 projects with over 18 GW of capacity across nine states in the US, including the Box Canyon site in Pinal County, Arizona.

5. Boralex (Kingsey Falls, Québec)

Founded in 1990, Canadian developer Boralex specialises in four renewable energy sectors: wind, solar, hydro and thermal. Boralex also develops energy storage projects, mostly in combination with renewable energy generators. A publicly traded company (TSE: BLX), it operates in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and France. To date, Boralex has developed renewable energy projects with a total installed capacity of 3.1GW, with more than 8GW of projects under development and construction. The company aims to install more than 12GW of renewable energy by 2030.

Almost every large-scale renewable energy installation in Canada is based on the work of a renewable energy developer. Developers acquire land, install PV panels or wind turbines, connect the system to the grid, and then sell it to renewable energy investors. Our list is the most comprehensive database of renewable energy developers in Canada and provides an excellent overview of companies with a pipeline of renewable energy projects.

The interconnection between renewable energy investors and developers

In Canada, renewable energy developers and investors work together closely to help the country achieve its clean energy goals. The developers’ role involves identifying viable sites, obtaining regulatory approvals and constructing projects. Investors, such as pension funds, utilities or family offices, provide the necessary financial backing. This partnership is essential for Canada’s energy transformation. With this in mind, the renewables.digital research team compiled a list of the largest renewable energy investors in Canada.
