List of 3 Spanish green hydrogen projects

This article will describe three green hydrogen plants in Spain, the projects are the cornerstone of Spains Green Hydrogen Roadmap. All of the projects are developed by firms found on our list of large European developers of green hydrogen.

This article is based on our list of the 50 largest green hydrogen developers in Europe which contains general contact details, company details as well as personal contact information.

Our previous article outlined Spain’s Hydrogen Roadmap which aims to have 4GW by 2030, requiring estimated investments of €10bn. In this article, we will introduce three large-scale green hydrogen projects currently under development in the country. The green hydrogen projects will be developed by renewable energy developers that can be found on our list of large European developers of green hydrogen.

Puertollano – Iberdrola’s 20MW Green Hydrogen Plant

The Spanish renewable energy giant aims to invest €3bn as part of the European Green Deal and a flagship project is its Puertollano green hydrogen, solar, and storage site. Iberdrola’s Puertollano site will have one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems in the world, producing green hydrogen from renewable sources. All energy produced will be supplied to the Fertiberia Group, a fertilizer plant. The project will require an investment of €150m, creating 1,000 jobs and preventing 48,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Due to the success of the project, the hydrogen plant was voted the best Hydrogen Project of the year by AAE Spain.

Power to Green Hydrogen – Acciona’s Green Hydrogen Plant Powered by 8.5MW and 5.85MW Solar Projects

A joint venture between Acciona and Enagas has led to the first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant in Spain and Southern Europe using an electrolyzer supplied by two solar plants in Lloseta (8.5MW) and Petra (5.85MW). The green hydrogen site will develop energy using blockchain technology using the GreenH2Chain platform developed by Acciona. The project will be developed by Enagas and Acciona alongside support from IDEA and CEMEX, once fully operational the site will produce 300 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The site is part of the Green Hysland project, in which the European Union’s Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking has committed to invest €10m to support the infrastructure.

Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley – Cespa, Alter Enersun and Enagas’ 200MW Green Hydrogen Plant

Spanish oil giant Cespa has partnered with Alter Enersun and Enagas to deliver a 200MW green hydrogen plant which will be connected to a solar site. The site is expected to become operational by 2026 and will exceed Cespa’s industrial consumption. The project is a cornerstone in Cespa’s plans to invest €3bn in green hydrogen projects in Huelva and Algeciras, the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley which has a pipeline of 2GW and once complete will produce 300,000 tons of hydrogen per annum. Alter Enersun will be responsible for developing the solar park whereas Enagas and Cespas will partner to produce the green hydrogen site.
