New York has the largest offshore wind pipeline in the United States, totaling more than 4.3GW. In this article, we present the three currently largest offshore wind projects in the state.
1) 1,260MW Empire Wind 2
First on our list is the Empire Wind 2 Project which has a capacity of 1,260MW. The offshore wind farm will be located about 14 miles from the Jones Beach State Park and connect to New York’s electricity grid in Nassau County. The project developer Equinor Wind plans for the mega project to become operational in 2027.

2) 1,230MW Beacon Wind
The Beacon Wind Project, also developed by Equinor Wind, has a generating capacity of 1,230MW. Located about 60 miles east of the Montauk Point, this project will be the first offshore wind project in the US that will use the High Voltage Direct Current transmission technology. It is expected to go online in 2028.

3) 924MW Sunrise Wind
Third on our list is the Sunrise Wind Project with a capacity of 924MW. It is currently being developed in a 50/50 partnership by Danish energy firm Ørsted and Massachussets-based company Eversource. Located over 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, the project will be connected to the state’s electricity grid in central Long Island. The Sunrise Wind project is expected to commence operations in 2025.
