Founded in 2011, Greenbacker is a limited liability company based in New York City that manages income-generating renewable energy and other energy-related businesses. Greenbacker has a rated system capacity of 2.22 GW in 35 states and provinces. Greenbacker’s portfolio consists of solar plants, wind farms and battery storage systems which contribute to company’s mission against the climate crisis.
Greenbacker Capital purchased a 49% interest in 150MW solar project which consists of 16 solar projects in the Minneapolis area. This investment represents a cornerstone in their target to ramp up their investments in America’s renewable energy sector. Enel Green Power North America which is the project’s original founder holds the remaining 51% ownership. The purchase is crucial to the state of Minnesota’s goal for renewable energy sources to comprise of 25% of total energy use by 2025 and offset the rising electricity usage in the state.
The New York-based renewable investment group has bought a 55MW wind farm from BlackRock Global Renewable Power Fund 2. The Howard wind farm became operational in 2011 and is located in Steuben County, New York. The deal represents the first wind project in New York for Greenbacker. The wind farm is the second largest in their portfolio and generates enough electricity to power 12,500 homes.
