The company was a pioneer in generating onshore wind, and now it is similarly a leader of the offshore wind market. In 2021, offshore wind became a focus for the company. Bilbao-based Iberdrola has 1,258 MW of offshore wind assets that are already operational and 5,500 MW of offshore wind assets that are under construction and will become operational until 2027.
Iberdrola and Masdar have formed a global alliance, committing to co-investing up to €15 billion in offshore wind and green hydrogen projects across Germany, the UK, and the USA. After the successful investment agreement in Baltic Eagle, Germany, the collaborative efforts of this alliance mark a significant milestone with a joint investment in the 1,400 MW East Anglia 3 offshore wind project situated in the United Kingdom. This agreement, in negotiation for the past several months, is set for potential signing by the end of Q1 2024. Under the terms, Masdar is anticipated to hold a 49% stake in this wind farm venture. Full commissioning of East Anglia 3 is slated for Q4 2026. This impactful project is set to provide energy for over 1.3 million British homes and generate employment opportunities, with an estimated 2,300 jobs anticipated to be created.
