European green hydrogen developer

List of 5 green hydrogen developers in Europe

Green hydrogen is one of the cornerstones for the future of the renewable energy industry and is key to the fight against climate change. Green hydrogen offers the opportunity and promise to decarbonize sectors ranging from transport to industrial processes. In addition, green hydrogen can act as a valuable energy storage technology, making renewable energy from green sources such as wind and solar projects more functional in terms of grid stability. The EU has established the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, which brings together industry leaders and policymakers to drive the green hydrogen sector forward – overall, Europe is a major player in the green hydrogen industry, with the UK being one of the market leaders. This article identifies five key green hydrogen players in the European market.

1. Gen2 Energy (Borre, Norway)

Gen2 Energy is a green hydrogen developer based in Borre. The Norwegian company was founded in 2014 and focuses on developing green hydrogen solutions in Scandinavia, particularly in Norway. The company is currently planning four projects, all based in Norway: two green hydrogen plants in Mosjøen (Helgeland), one plant in Meråker (Trøndelag) and one in Suldal in the Ryfylke region. All projects are expected to be operational in 2024 or 2025. Altogether, the company has 1GW of Hydrogen Energy projects in its pipeline.

2. Lhyfe (Nantes, France)

Lhyfe is a green hydrogen developer based in Nantes, France. The company offers diverse solutions, starting from green hydrogen for local authorities, carriers and logistics providers, and fuel suppliers to industries. In 2021, Lhyfe opened the world’s first industrial plant for the production of green hydrogen that is directly connected to a wind farm. Lhyfe has more project sites not only directly on-site but also holds onshore and offshore production units. The company’s production units are based in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Their energy source (to produce green hydrogen) is, in most cases, wind farms and solar parks.

3. Protium (London, UK)

Protium is a renewable energy project developer based in London. The company focuses on the development of large-scale green hydrogen projects. As well as sourcing green hydrogen from renewable energy sources (e.g., wind and solar farms), Protium is also active in the next part of the value chain. The company supports the decarbonization of the heat, power and transport sectors by providing the hydrogen it produces. The company aims to develop 1GW of green hydrogen production facilities in the UK by 2030. This would represent 20% of the government’s target. By the end of the year, Protium aims to have completed 500MW of hydrogen projects.

4. Conrad Energy Limited (Abingdon, UK)

Conrad Energy is an independent power producer (IPP) based in Abingdon. The company owns and operates over 60 renewable energy sites across the UK. The developer has a portfolio that includes solar energy projects, grid stability projects, energy storage and green hydrogen development. A current project of the IPP is a 3MW project at Lowestoft PowerPark, consisting of three hydrogen electrolysers with associated storage. More than 70MW are in development.

5. TES H2 (Zaventem, Belgium)

Headquartered in Zaventem, Belgium, TES H2 produces green hydrogen on a large scale for various sectors (mainly mobility, industry and energy). The company currently operates in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Canada, and the United States. The producer relies on renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower to sustainably supply green hydrogen for its projects.
