List of 5 large renewable energy developers in Spain

Spain’s strong sun attracts not only tourists but also renewable energy developers. With many hours of sunshine per day and a long summer season, the conditions are ideal for photovoltaic solar farms. For this reason, many renewable energy developers are based on the Spanish mainland, accelerating the improvement of the technological implementation of renewable energy projects. Five developers are profiled below, based on the pioneering role of Spanish developers.

1. Iberdrola (Bilbao)

Iberdrola is a world leader in renewable energy, with more than 56,000 MW of renewable capacity. The company plans to invest €21.5 billion by 2026, focusing on offshore wind, onshore wind and solar projects. Iberdrola is also promoting green hydrogen technologies and large-scale renewable initiatives such as the East Anglia Hub and the Tâmega hydroelectric project. These investments support the company’s commitment to the energy transition and a low-carbon economy.

2. Acciona (Alcobendas)

Acciona is a Spanish conglomerate dedicated to developing and managing infrastructure and renewable energy projects. ACCIONA Energía, the world’s largest 100% renewable energy company, is responsible for most of Acciona’s business in the renewable energy sector. ACCIONA Energía is active in wind, solar, battery storage, hydropower, biomass and hydrogen projects. The company owns 9,400 MW of wind power capacity, 3,000 MW of solar energy capacity and 700 MW of hydroelectric power capacity, as well as 190 MW of battery storage capacity. This results in 26,700 GW of renewable power produced in 2024.

3. Zelestra (Getxo)

Zelestra Energy is one of the world’s largest Spanish renewable energy developers, with branches all over the globe. The company mainly develops wind and solar energy projects in India, the USA, Latin America, Germany, Southern Europe and Spain. In its core market of Spain, Zelestra has a project portfolio of over 6 GW, including more than 800 MW of projects that are contracted, under construction or operational. The company has also secured a €147 million contract to construct a 237 MWdc solar portfolio in Spain. Zelestra has a project pipeline of 8 GW in Southern Europe and another 2 GW in Germany. In India, the company has a project pipeline of 5.3 GW, while in the US and Latin America, Zelestra is committed to 4 GW and 7 GW, respectively.

4. Matrix Renewables (Madrid)

Matrix Renewables currently manages a diverse portfolio totaling 15.5 GW of renewable energy projects, energy storage, and green hydrogen initiatives. These projects span various stages of development—including operational, under construction, near-ready-to-build, and in development—across Europe, the United States, and Latin America. In Spain the company operates 64 Projects, with 4,119 MWp.

5. Prodiel (Seville)

The Seville-based group was founded in 1994 and has developed 7.5GW of solar energy to date. Prodiel is responsible for the development of one of the largest solar parks in the Iberian Peninsula. The 300MW site was developed in 2020 and comprises 554,000 solar modules. In April 2022, the group announced a joint venture with Swiss investment group Smartenergy. The new partnership, called Greenfield PV, will develop 5GW of solar panels in Spain and the team will consist of 50 solar development specialists. In total, the company has realised more than 45 large-scale solar projects.
