Solar energy developers in Spain

List of 5 Renewable Energy Developers in Spain

The strong sun in Spain does not only attract tourists, but also developers of renewable energy. Due to the many hours of sunshine per day and the long summer season, the conditions for photovoltaic solar farms are very suitable. For this reason, many renewable energy developers are based on the Spanish mainland and expedite from there the amelioration of the technology implementation of renewable energy projects. Based on the pioneer role of Spanish developers, five developers will be introduced in the following.

1. Iberia Solar (Valencia)

The Spanish developer for solar farms was founded in 2018 and is backed by one of Spain’s largest equity funds, Asterion Industrial Partners. By realizing numerous solar parks with a total capacity of over 2 GW, the developer is pursuing their goal of creating a greener energy generation and thereby sustainable future. With regional focus on Spain, Iberia Solar develops photovoltaic solar parks while elucidating their values as efficiency and sustainability.

2. EDP Renewables (Madrid)

As third-largest wind energy producer worldwide, the Madrid based developer is an expert in realizing onshore and offshore wind parks. In order to drive the energy transition further forward, EDP Renewables is also developing solar farms while continuously striving to become a global leader in the field of renewable energy generation. The stock-listed company stands for innovation, sustainability and humanization while seeking for further growth and operational excellence.

Update 2023: EDP has added over 1 GW installed capacity in solar energy projects alone in 2022 to their portfolio, leading to nearly 15 GW of total installed capacity.

3. Repsol (Madrid)

The Spanish energy provider with more than 25.000 employees accepted their responsibility in the context of the energy transition by refocusing their strategy and expanding to the field of renewable energy generation. Thus, Repsol shares to overall goal of a sustainable future by aiming the net zero emission status within the next 30 years. Based on this commitment, the Madrid based developer switched to innovative solutions and focuses on applied research for new technologies.

The Madrileño-based solar developer has developed 1.8GW of solar energy in Spain, the US, and Chile, with a future 2.3GW pipeline. The US company initially began developing Spanish solar energy in 2020 thanks to acquisitions from Trina Solar and Rolwind. Since then, Matrix Renewables have built a 975MW portfolio in the space of just 18 months. The Madrid-based group aim to expand on this portfolio and in January 2022, announced the development of two new solar projects with a future 300MW capacity.

Update 2023: Matrix renewalbes has begun construction of two solar plants in Spain. The two solar energy projects in the north-west of Spain will have a combined capacity of 66MW.

5. Prodiel (Seville)

The Seville-based group were founded in 1994 and to date have developed 2.1GW of solar energy. Prodiel are responsible for the development of one of the largest solar parks in the Iberian Peninsula. The 300MW site was developed in 2020 and is comprised of 554,000 solar modules. In April 2022, the group announced a new joint venture with Swiss investment group, Smartenergy. The new partnership named Greenfield PV will develop 5GW of Spanish solar and the team consists of 50 specialists in solar development.

Solar and wind energy are just two of renewable energy sources necessary to combat climate change. Also because of the steadily increasing demand for electricity, which will continue to rise due to new technologies such as electronic-cars, the renewable energy market is therefore a very promising one for the future. Especially the sunny and windy country of Spain offers many opportunities for the integration of green energies into the power grid – accordingly, there is a large number of project developers who design and plan these projects. Our list enables landowners, investors and other companies to find suitable partners. In order to compile our list, our team screens renewable energy deals in Europe and in Spain analyzes the involved parties and adds them to our database. Every project developer in our list can also be found in our directory. In case we missed a relevant renewable energy developer, you can submit a new listing here. In case we made an error on a certain firm – for instance not mentioning an asset – you can always report an error on the respective page. Through crowdsourcing, we consequently improve our list.
