List of 5 solar energy operations and maintenance companies in Europe
Solar energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources in order to fight climate change. Especially in southern European countries – like Spain, Italy etc. – solar energy is already an important part of the energy mix – and its share is growing. Accordingly, it is essential to maintain and operate the solar parks professionally. The following article presents five operations and maintenance companies focusing on solar parks.
1) BELECTRIC Solar & Battery GmbH (Kolitzheim, Germany)
Belectric Solar & Battery GmbH is one of the best-known solar park operations and maintenance companies in Europe and especially in Germany, where Belectric has its headquarters. The 2001 founded company is active globally and offers services for classic solar power plants, floating PV, battery storage, hybrid plants or repowering projects. Belectric is active all over the value chain, starting from innovation, project development, over EPC to O&M services. Thus, it can be considered one of the leading solar O&M companies in Europe. Currently the company has an installed capacity of 5,001 MWp with 2,511 MWp in O&M.
Update 2024: BELECTRIC is among the first companies to achieve the significant milestone of one gigawatt of installed solar capacity in Germany (and 5 GW worldwide).
2) Scatec ASA (Oslo, Norway)
Scatec ASA is one of the largest renewable energy companies worldwide. The industry giant was founded in 2007 and acts globally, with their headquarters in Oslo, Norway. Scatec has over 3 GW of projects in operation. The company has expertise in a variety of different renewables – starting from hydro, over wind and storage projects to solar energy. As Belectric, Scatec is involved in all steps in the value chain – operations and maintenance being a huge part in their services.
Update 2024: This September Scatec has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for a 1 GW solar and 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Egypt. “This will be the first hybrid solar and battery project in Egypt and demonstrates Scatec’s strong position as one of the largest renewable energy producers in the country.” says Scatec’s CEO Terje Pilskog.
3) Sonnedix Power Holdings Limited (Saint Grégoire, France)
The name is program – Sonnedix Power Holdings Limited is a renewable energy company focusing on solar assets. The renewable energy producer not only develops and builds renewable energy projects, but also operates them. Since the founding in 2009, the company has accumulated a total capacity of over 9GW (including the development pipeline). Their main market is Europe, but the Saint-Grégoire based company is also active in Chile, Japan and the USA.
Update 2024: Sonnedix Power Holdings Ltd has initiated the construction of the Sonnedix Douro, a 149-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Portugal. This marks the company’s largest PV park in Europe. Situated in the municipality of Tarouca, Viseu district, northern Portugal, the project will be executed by local EPC firm Zagope and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
4) Acciona, SA (Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain)
When listing important renewable energy companies, one company, of course, cannot be left out – Acciona SA. The Madrid-based renewable energy company is one of the biggest worldwide – with a very portfolio of renewable energy assets. Operations and maintenance is one of the biggest pillar in their renewable energy section. The globally active company offers operations and maintenance services both fixed and mobile solar panels.
Update 2024: In January 2024, Acciona Energia finalised its inaugural hybrid renewable energy facility. This hybrid park, consisting of a 36MW wind component and a 29MW solar plant, has been integrated into the existing Escepar wind farm site in Spain. The project spans across the municipalities of Villalba del Rey and Tinajas in Cuenca.
5) ecoprime Italia S.r.l. (Milano, Italy)
Ecoprime is an Italian renewable energy company offering services for solar parks all over the value chain – one of which is operations and maintenance. The company was founded in 2011 and mainly focuses on wind and solar assets in Italy, France and Spain. Regarding their O&M services, the company has expertise in both large green field plants as well as roof top plants. Ecoprime has 500 MW of assets in Europe in over 200 renewable energy projects.
Update 2024: Ecoprime has successfully completed four photovoltaic projects in the Sicilian provinces of Agrigento and Caltnissetta, with a total power output of 4 MW. The company fully developed, financed and constructed the projects. Afterwards the plants were sold to the Renewability consortium, for whom Ecoprime will be responsible for the O&M activities.
