Description
List of 5 large battery storage developers in Europe
Energy storage projects are crucial in order to integrate and utilize renewable energy into the energy mix, particularly in the European energy market. By saving surplus energy, energy storage projects allow this energy to be used in times when the supply of renewable energy is low, leading to the optimization of renewable energy resources as well as enabling grid stability. The integration of renewable energy resources, and in turn energy storage facilities, has increased in response to European sustainability targets. Accordingly, a large number of relevant players can be found in the European market. The following article presents five leading battery project developers from Europe.
1. Cero Generation (London, UK)
Headquartered in London, UK, Cero Generation specializes in the development of advanced battery energy storage systems as well as solar energy projects. The company has a geographical focus on Europe, operating in eight countries. Together with Enso Energy, Cero has reached financial closure on a 50MW battery project in Gloucestershire. This project will be online at the end of 2024. Cero Generation has a battery storage and solar portfolio of 26 GW with over 370 projects under development. The company is a Macquarie Asset Management portfolio company.
Update 2024: In August of this year Cero generation has announced the financial close on five solar projects in the Palencia region Spain. This portfolio has a total installed capacity of 244.7 MWp. It is anticipated that the five projects will collectively deliver in excess of 480 GWh of renewable energy on an annual basis. This is equivalent to the energy required to power approximately 150,000 homes and to avoid the emission of over 175,000 tonnes of CO2e.
2. Enso Energy (Cirencester, UK)
Based in Cirencester, UK, Enso Energy focuses on developing utility-scale battery storage projects across Europe. The company also develops solar energy projects and offers PPAs. As mentioned above, Enso Energy has only recently (May 2023) reached financial closure on a batter project in Gloucestershire together with Cero Generation.
3. Alfen N.V. (Almere, Netherlands)
Alfen is an Almere-based renewable energy company focusing on providing energy solutions, ranging from solutions in smart grid and EV charging solutions to energy storage projects. With their two products, TheBattery Elements and TheBattery Mobile, the company offers solutions for mobile as well as stationary applications. Together with Centrica Business Solutions, Alfen will deliver a battery storage project in Ostend, Belgium. The 24MW project will become operational by early 2024. Alfen has been engaged in the development of energy storage systems since 2011, with installations in nine or more European countries. Additionally, the company has secured 777+ MWh of energy capacity in 11 European countries.
Update 2024: Alfen has formed a partnership with Ellevio Energy Solutions with the objective of enhancing the flexibility of Sweden’s electricity grid. The partnership will result in the installation of 90 MW/90 MWh of power capacity. The partnership includes five sites, encompassing systems with a capacity ranging from 10 MW to 40 MW, which utilise Alfen’s TheBattery Elements solution.
4. Windel Energy Ltd (Blyth, UK)
The Blyth-headquartered Windel Energy is a diverse renewable energy player with expertise in wind and solar energy projects, but also developing energy storage projects. Windel Energy focuses on battery energy storage systems (BESS), specifically on lithium-ion batteries. Their grid connection agreements accumulates to over 2.3GW of BESS sites. Windel has over 3GW of BESS sites with grid connection agreements that are currently under development, with a capacity ranging from 150MW to 440MW. Just in May 2023, the company has unveiled plans for a new solar and energy storage park in Lincolnshire. This projects will have an anticipated generation capacity of 300-360GWh per year.
Update 2024: Windel Energy and Canadian Solar are teaming up to develop 1.5 gigawatts of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the UK. Windel will work on the early stages of the BESS projects, and Canadian Solar will provide funding and support. This collaboration follows their commitment to develop 1.4 gigawatts of solar together.
5. SSE Renewables plc (Glasgow, Scotland)
The Glasgow-based SSE Renewables is one of the best-know renewable energy players in Europe. The company not only develops on- and offshore wind as well as hydro projects, but also energy storage projects. As of May 2023, the company entered contracts to deliver its second BESS. The project will have 150MW of installed capacity and is located in West Yorkshire. Overall the company has nearly 2GW of energy storage pipeline in the UK and Ireland.
Update 2024: SSE Renewables recently completed an installation of 136 battery units at its 150 MW Ferrybridge battery energy storage facility.
