List of 3 large battery storage developers in Europe
Energy storage projects are crucial to integrate and utilize renewable energy into the energy mix, particularly in the European energy market. By saving surplus energy, energy storage projects allow this energy to be used in times when the supply of renewable energy is low, leading to the optimization of renewable energy resources and enabling grid stability. The integration of renewable energy resources and, in turn, energy storage facilities has increased in response to European sustainability targets. Accordingly, a large number of relevant players can be found in the European market. The following article presents three leading battery project developers from Europe.
1. Cero Generation (London, UK)
Headquartered in London, UK, Cero Generation specializes in the development of advanced battery energy storage systems as well as solar energy projects. The company has a geographical focus on Europe, operating in eight countries. Together with Enso Energy, Cero has reached financial closure on a 50MW battery project in Gloucestershire. This project will be online at the end of 2024. Cero Generation has a battery storage and solar portfolio of 26 GW with over 370 projects under development. The company is a Macquarie Asset Management portfolio company.
2. Windel Energy Ltd (Blyth, UK)
The Blyth-headquartered Windel Energy is a diverse renewable energy player with expertise in wind and solar energy projects, but also developing energy storage projects. Windel Energy focuses on battery energy storage systems (BESS), specifically on lithium-ion batteries. Their grid connection agreements accumulate to over 2.3GW of BESS sites. Windel has over 3GW of BESS sites with grid connection agreements that are currently under development, with a capacity ranging from 150MW to 440MW. Just in May 2023, the company unveiled plans for a new solar and energy storage park in Lincolnshire. This project will have an anticipated generation capacity of 300-360GWh per year.
3. SSE Renewables plc (Glasgow, Scotland)
The Glasgow-based SSE Renewables is one of the best-known renewable energy players in Europe. The company not only develops on- and offshore wind as well as hydro projects, but also energy storage projects. As of May 2023, the company entered contracts to deliver its second BESS. The project will have 150MW of installed capacity and is located in West Yorkshire. Overall the company has nearly 2GW of energy storage pipeline in the UK and Ireland.
