Wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources worldwide and also in Europe. The engineering, procurement and design (EPC) of wind farms is therefore an essential part in fighting climate change. EPC companies oversee and are involved in various aspects of a project’s lifecycle, thereby having a unique expertise in their respective asset focus. This article presents three important wind park EPC companies based and operating in Europe.

1) Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark)

Vestas is one of the most important companies in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the EPC sector. They are involved in the development and construction of onshore and offshore wind energy projects, as well as the design of the essential wind turbines for each project. They have a total installed capacity of 193 GW, and their projects are located across the globe. Since 2006, Vestas has executed more than 250 EPC projects with a combined capacity of over 10 GW in more than 42 countries.

2) CJR Renewables (Matosinhos, Portugal)

The Portuguese CJR Renewables is a global service provider for renewable energy sources, mainly focusing on wind farms and solar plants. CJR Renewables has been active since the 70s. In 2002, the service provider entered the wind energy business by starting construction on a wind farm in Portugal. As of now, the company has over 16.2GW of installed projects across all areas, in more than 28 countries. In the wind energy sector, CJR Renewables offers comprehensive EPC/BoP solutions and has to date completed projects totalling over 5,300 MW. The Warya Farm project is Peru’s largest wind farm. CJR Renewables is also a leading provider of mechanical and electrical installation and maintenance services for wind turbines, serving owners and developers. In this area, they have installed more than 7,400 MW.

3) SOWITEC Group GmbH (Sonnenbühl, Germany)

Sowitec Group is a German renewable energy company based in Sonnenbühl. The company was founded in 1993 and has since developed a portfolio of nearly 4GW of installed capacity. The service provider offers a variety of EPC services, starting with grid connection planning or quality assurance. They also offer EPC-M services. Their EPC management service portfolio covers infrastructure, grid connection planning, wind turbine specialists, quality assurance, environmental protection, occupational safety, project accounting and administration. The company’s core market is South America. In Argentina, they have 3,140 MW of wind projects in development; in Brazil, a further 8,740 MW; in Colombia, 600 MW; and in Chile, 120 MW.
