Solar developers in Europe

Solar energy developers in Europe

There are also project developers in Europe who focus on the development of solar parks. Starting with site analyses, through design and then the project planning of plants, project developers are experts in the field. They work closely with renewable energy investors who invest in/buy these plants. Our list is the most extensive database of European solar energy developers.

Using the list find business partners

Our list contains valuable information in order to identify and then get into contact with relevant solar plant developers according to your individual needs. Our list is tailored to get an extensive and helpful overview of solar park developers in Europe and, respectively, potential business partners.

Renewable energy research and transaction analysis

We are research experts – we screen renewable energy deals in Europe and analyze involved parties. We constantly improve and update our list, also through crowdsourcing: in case we missed a relevant European solar energy developer, you can submit a new listing here. Moreover, if we made an error on an entry, for example not including the installed capacity, you can report an error on the respective listing in our open-access directory, where all our entries can be found.

List of 10 large solar park developers in Europe

Solar energy is one of the best-known renewable energies – furthermore, solar energy is a classic sustainable investment alongside wind energy and offers a promising path to sustainable energy, especially in the wake of climate change. It is in the nature of solar energy to be used mainly in sunny countries – accordingly, European solar development is largely found in the warmer countries of Europe, such as Spain, Portugal, France, or Italy. But also in the neighboring countries, like Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, etc., there are a lot of solar energy developers who want to have their share in the growing market. In the following article, we present 10 of the most relevant European solar developers.

1. EDP Renováveis SA (Madrid, Spain)

EDP Renováveis was founded in 2007 and is one of the best-known renewable energy developers. Being active in Europe, North America, and Brazil the Spanish solar developer has installed over 12,2 GW globally. The company has planned, developed, and installed over 15 solar parks worldwide, which accounts for roughly 25% of its total renewable energy portfolio. EDP Renováveis is also very active in the wind energy sector and is the world’s third-largest wind energy producer.

2. BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH (Munich, Germany)

BayWa r.e.‘s history goes as far as 1923 when the first company was founded. In 1976, the German-based solar developer presented the so-called “Sonnenhaus”, a precursor of today’s solar energy. Today, BayWa r.e is the largest renewable energy developer in Germany as well as in Europe. The Munich-based solar developer is globally active and has projects in 28 countries all over the world. Solar energy is a huge asset for the company as BayWa r.e. has realized over 625 solar projects with more than 1.6 GW.

3. EDF Renewables (Paris, France)

EDF Renewables is a French renewable energy developer focused on wind and solar energy as well as energy storage. The Paris-based solar developer has a lot of experience in the solar segment and is present mostly in Europe and North America. In mid-2020, EDF has achieved a portfolio of over 3.000 installed MW of solar energy which makes their solar segment the second biggest asset of the company, just behind wind energy.

4. Enel Green Power (Rome, Italy)

Enel Green Power was founded in 2008 and has been able to expand to a total of 28 countries on 5 continents since. The Italian renewable energy developer focuses not only on the development of solar parks but is also active in the wind, biomass, geothermal, and also hydro/hydroelectric sectors. Overall Enel has installed a total of 4700 MW – the solar portfolio of the Rome-based developer accounts for over 1000 MW installed capacity in Europe alone.

5. Voltalia (Paris, France)

Voltalia is another French renewable energy developer – with a presence in 20 countries, the developer has achieved over 1GW of installed capacity, with over 9GW in the pipeline. The Paris-based developer was founded in 2005 and has been active in various fields of renewable energy since – starting from solar/photovoltaic energy over wind parks to hydro energy and energy storage. Functioning as an independent power producer as well as a service provider, Voltalia is involved in every aspect of the value chain.

6. Iberdrola (Bilbao, Spain)

Iberdrola is a well-known Spanish renewable energy developer – mostly active in the wind sector. But the leading renewable energy developer is also very active in the solar market and plays a huge role in the development of solar and photovoltaic plants. Especially in Spain, the Bilbao-based developer has been very active in the last years and developed multiple solar farms in its home country. Overall, the portfolio of Iberdrola holds 52.000 MW of installed capacity.
